The Average Diet Creates a Stress Disaster (Na/K Ratio)

The average American consumes ~3,400–4,000 mg of sodium per day and only ~2,000–2,600 mg of potassium.

The recommended potassium intake? 4,700 mg/day.

That means most people are running a severe sodium-potassium imbalance, directly impacting adrenal output, blood pressure regulation, and stress tolerance. The ideal Na/K ratio is ~2.4:1 — but stress, inflammation, sweating, low-salt diets, and processed foods destroy it.

Low potassium and dysregulated sodium leads to fatigue, dizziness, anxiety, poor exercise tolerance, brain fog, and emotional fragility. People call this “burnout,” but it’s a mineral shortage masquerading as a mental problem.

Blindly adding salt or potassium without testing can worsen symptoms depending on adrenal status. Testing shows whether stress has depleted your reserves — or if your body can’t regulate what you’re already consuming.

Hypercalcemia from D3 (cholecalciferol) happens at lower dosages than most people think.

Vitamin D supplements tell your guts to absorb more calcium from your food. This is why most people say you 'have to take K2 with it' to help the calcium go to the right places (bones and teeth) and not other places that can cause harm.

The fact that you 'should' take K2 with vitamin D is just proof of the harm it can do on its own by raising calcium levels.

Sleep issues are not caused by a melatonin deficiency. They are a product of stress hormones, often adrenaline and cortisol keeping you alert when you should drifting off to sleep.

What causes stress hormones to be too high at night?
-blood sugar dysregulation
-dieting (low carb, low calorie, low anything)
-not eating enough
-fatty acid deficiency (by way of impacting blood sugar)
-mineral deficiencies (calcium is big here)
-2020 😳

Melatonin is just a bad sleep bandaid. Dig deeper and you will always find answers.

Are you taking the 'skin deep' or 'root cause' approach?

Science tells us quite a bit about the gut origin of skin issues (and dysbiosis or the disruption of microbe balance in the gut is often to blame).

Hopefully in another decade gut microbiome testing will be an integral part of dermatologic care, but until then, you have me 😉.

You probably haven't heard much about gamma linolenic acid (GLA) deficiency, but it's a super common fatty acid deficiency (I find it in about 90% of my clients) that has huge ramifications on your cellular health and inflammation status. When it comes up in mainstream news, it's typically being touted for its skin, hair and nail perks.

Deficiency

Common signs of GLA deficiency can be vague, but include:

inflammation
dry hair
skin issues
bumps on the back of your arms
cracked fingertips
unwanted gene expression
increased body fat
GLA Status Determinants

GLA is a potent anti-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acid that is synthesized in the body from linolenic acid (LA). Linolenic acid is found abundantly in omega-6 fatty acids like safflower, sunflower, sesame, corn, and cottonseed oils, which there is no shortage of in the standard American diet.

If the precursor to GLA is abundant in most people's diet, why is GLA deficiency so rampant?

It all comes down to conversion modulators as well as your general health.

You see, there are certain modulators that support the conversion of Linolenic Acid into GLA include via the enzyme delta-6-desaturase. These include:

Zinc
B6
B3
Magnesium
Vitamin C
Vitamin E

If your body's deficient in some of these, your GLA conversion status will likely be impaired.

And then there are also modulators that block or reduce the conversion of LA into GLA. They include:

Age
Insulin
Coffee
Alcohol
Trans fats

So as you can see, improving your GLA status naturally requires a full body nutrition approach, although there are also shortcuts...
