Our hearts are with the family, friends, and Hawkeye Marching Band community mourning a University of Iowa student who passed away after collapsing during a game on September 5.

He was a section leader, a musician, and a friend who meant so much to the people around him. No family should ever have to face this.

Dr. Pina Violano spent years caring for critically ill children.
She has seen what it looks like when a family meets a cardiologist for the first time in an ICU, after a cardiac arrest, when there is nothing left to catch.

Screening moves that moment earlier. An ECG can surface a hidden heart condition while a child is still healthy and still playing.

This is what heart screening looks like when a whole community shows up for its kids.

In Collier County, a school district, a fire department, and a local hospital came together for one goal: making sure student-athletes get screened before they take the field.

The concern going in was always the same. How do we possibly do this at scale, for this many students? By the end of a two-hour training, every person in the room felt confident performing a screening.

You can’t see HCM from the bleachers.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common inherited heart condition, and one of the most common causes of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes. The hard part for parents: most kids who have it have no symptoms at all. They look healthy. They feel healthy. A physical exam alone can miss up to 90% of young people at risk.

That’s what an ECG is for. It reads the heart’s electrical activity, which is abnormal in more than 90% of HCM cases, and gives a board-certified cardiologist something concrete to review. HCM can’t be prevented, but when it’s found early, families can plan around it.

If your athlete is competing in Florida this year, the Second Chance Act asks first-time FHSAA athletes in grades 9-12 to complete an ECG before they play. Start at flyouthheart.org .

As director of community engagement at Quinnipiac University’s School of Nursing, she has built her career around one belief: that many tragedies can be caught in time.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the number one cause of death in young athletes, and 80% of those deaths show no prior symptoms. A standard physical exam may miss up to 90% of young people at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. An ECG can surface what an exam alone cannot.

Some clinicians have questioned whether ECG screening is worth the cost. It is a fair question, and the answer comes down to one number.

When ECGs are read using criteria built for general populations, false positives can run as high as 30%. That means unnecessary referrals, extra testing, and anxious families.

Read using the International Consensus Criteria, that figure drops to roughly 2%.
