Collagen supplements do not travel straight to your skin or joints. Your body first breaks them down, then uses amino acids mainly glycine, proline and lysine to build new collagen. Vitamin C, iron, copper and other nutrients help that process work properly.
The main takeaway: deficiencies matter, but more is not always better.
Correcting a genuine vitamin or mineral deficiency can restore collagen production. One study also found that 15 g of gelatin with about 50 mg of vitamin C, taken an hour before exercise, increased a blood marker of collagen synthesis.
Plain Gelatin is a lot cheaper than the collagen supplements most health influencers are trying to sell you.
Collagen peptides may modestly improve skin hydration and elasticity, but the results are much less convincing in higher-quality, independently funded studies. Extra copper, zinc or manganese has no proven benefit when you already get enough and high dose zinc can actually cause copper deficiency. How do you know when you’re getting enough? Well you should probably track it. That’s where we can help.
