Today, the City of Seattle recognizes Orange Shirt Day, an annual day of remembrance that honors the survivors and victims of Indigenous residential and boarding schools and acknowledges continued trauma the Indian Boarding Schools have had on Indigenous individuals, families, and communities. Students from the Urban Native Education Alliance (UNEA) worked with Seattle Mayor Katie B. Wilson to draft an Orange Shirt Day proclamation as part of their work to ensure Native history is never forgotten. Last weekend, the youth read the official City of Seattle Orange Shirt Day proclamation at Mother Nation’s Every Child Matters, Healing Through Resilience 5k Race at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center.
