Digging a hole can tell you a lot of information about the soil on your land.

In one spade of healthy soil we would like find at least a couple earthworms but higher numbers are better. We are observing other macro fauna as well, such as isopods, springtails, and spiders.

Digging a hole gives us a good opportunity to smell and feel the texture of the soil which can reveal a lot about CEC, and pH.

We also look at plant roots, and the profile of the soil below the surface which can give insights on compaction.

We dump water in the same hole and set a timer learn about the soils infiltration rates moisture holding capacity.

These simple tests are important on creating a full baseline soil report. We pair these with microbial testing, other physical tests, and chemistry lab testing to create window to view your soil holistically. We use these results to tailor fertilizer and and microbial recommendations that fit your budget and context.
