As families prepare for a new school year, many are celebrating milestones, buying school supplies, and watching their children walk through those school doors once again.

For some, this season carries a different kind of weight.

Today, we remember our Tabby girl and every child who will never have the chance to walk those school hallways, laugh with friends, learn, grow, or create the countless memories that make childhood so special.

As you send your children back to school, take a moment to remember the children who should be there too.

They are deeply missed. Please consider supporting the Tabby Welshans Memorial Golf Tournament in any way you can as we help fight Childhood Cancer, set up a scholarship fund in Tabby’s name and help local kids battling.

After losing her daughter, Tabby, to DIPG, a highly aggressive, brain tumor, in 2025, Jennifer was invited to Seattle Children's annual Journey Grief Support Program memorial service. Moved by the compassion, connection and support she found, she returned this year, not only to honor Tabby's memory, but as a volunteer helping other families navigating the journey of grief. Stories like Jennifer's are a reminder that even in loss, community can bring comfort, healing and hope.

Aucker, Carlip and Sojka Named Honorary Co-Chairs of Second Annual Tabby Welshans Memorial Charity Golf Tournament

The organizing committee of the Second Annual Tabby Welshans Memorial Charity Golf Tournament is pleased to announce that three distinguished community leaders; Kendra Aucker, former President and CEO of WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital, Freddi Carlip, longtime journalist and society writer for The Daily Item, and Lisa Sojka, entrepreneur and community advocate, have accepted the invitation to serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for this year’s event.

The tournament celebrates the life and legacy of Tabby Welshans bringing together friends, businesses, and community members for a day of fellowship, friendly competition, and charitable giving. Proceeds from the tournament will support an annual scholarship awarded to an outstanding Selinsgrove high school graduating senior who most reflects Tabby’s generous spirit, compassion for others, and unwavering commitment to the community she loved.

Although faced with an inoperable cancerous brain tumor to which she succumbed at age 11, Tabby never allowed the illness to define her; rather, she defined herself through kindness, courage, and an unwavering belief in something greater.

No setback could shake her faith. By example, she taught that true strength is not just in fighting, but in smiling through the storm, in believing when others might falter, and in embracing each day with gratitude and grace. Commented Lisa Sojka: “Tabby may be gone from our sight, but she will forever be in our hearts, reminding us that often the bravest souls come in the smallest packages.”

“We are deeply honored to serve together as Honorary Co-Chairs of this special event” said Kendra Aucker on behalf of the three co-chairs. “Tabby touched countless lives through her joyful spirit, optimism, and willingness to help others. This tournament is more than a day on the golf course; instead, it’s an opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate the remarkable legacy of a brave little girl, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. We encourage everyone to join us in supporting a cause that so beautifully reflects the values Tabby lived every day.”

Tournament organizers expressed their gratitude to Aucker, Carlip, and Sojka for lending their leadership and community spirit to the event. “Their combined commitment to service, philanthropy, and civic engagement embodies the very principles the tournament seeks to promote” organizers stated.

The tournament is scheduled for Friday, September 18, at the Bucknell University golf course, 366 Smoketown Road, Lewisburg, PA 17837. It’s a four person scramble with numerous prizes and awards including the possibility of winning a 2026 Subaru, for a hole in one, sponsored by W&L Subaru. The registration fee is $400 per foursome or $125 for individuals. Registration begins at 7:30 AM with a shotgun start at 9:00 AM.

If you've never stepped onto a Pediatric oncology floor, I hope you never have to.

I hope you never learn how to smile while your heart is breaking.

I hope you never sit beside a hospital bed pretending everything will be okay when you're terrified it won't.

I hope you never watch your child lose her spark

Or endure radiation.

Or recover from surgeries before they're even old enough to drive.

Children should be worrying about recess, birthday parties, and what they're going to be for Halloween.

Not cancer

Not survival.

Not whether the treatment will work.

Every child deserves a childhood.

Tabby deserved one too.

I'll be honest. It doesn't sit right with me that so many terrible human beings get to live. While so many of our very beautiful and kind children die such cruel deaths.

Today is DIPG Awareness Day. 🎗️

These pictures are hard to look at because they tell a story no family should ever have to live.

This is what DIPG did to our Tabby.
DIPG took just 14 months to bring our entire family to its knees.

Little by little it stole pieces of childhood. It stole comfort, independence, normal moments, and eventually so much more. It forced a little girl who loved BIG, laughed hard, and had the kind of light that filled every room... to spend her days fighting battles no child should ever have to fight.

DIPG is an aggressive pediatric brain cancer that grows deep within the brainstem. It slowly takes away a child’s ability to walk, talk, swallow, see, move, and eventually breathe. There is still no cure.

And that's the part that will never sit right with me.

Because children are still being diagnosed.
Parents are still hearing words that stop time.
Families are still being handed impossible odds, while expected to make life changing decisions and somehow holding onto hope all while standing in the middle of crushing heartbreak.

If you knew Tabby, then you know this story isn't only about loss.

It's about a girl with grit. A girl with fire. A girl who fought with strength, humor, courage, and a spirit bigger than anything this disease ever threw at her.
It's about a love that didn't end.
A light that never left. A legacy that keeps moving.

Today I ask you to remember Tabby with me. Remember every child still fighting.
Remember every parent carrying what feels impossible.

Because these babies deserve more than statistics and impossible choices. They deserve real options. Real hope. A future.

Tabby deserved better. And until that changes, we'll keep saying her name. 🩷
