Very bad news this morning:
York county, SC

The yellow-legged hornet has now been found in York County. One of our customers, who is also an arborist, spotted, caught, and reported the hornet, and Clemson quickly followed up by setting additional traps. We’re incredibly thankful for customers who look out for our environment and our bees. Thanks Peter!

Clemson is preparing an official news release, and we will share it as soon as it’s published. They are actively setting more traps and working to locate the nest, which is harder this time of year as the hornets begin to go dormant.

A big thank-you to Brad Cavin and other clemson members, who has spent countless hours trapping and helping with the capture of many these nests closer to the ocean and for their help in York County .

First detected in the U.S. in 2023 (Savannah, GA), this invasive hornet is a serious predator of honey bees. Look for a dark body with a bright yellow band and yellow legs. If you see one, report it immediately to your state agriculture department.

How do we stop it?
By getting everyone involved. The more traps we put out, the faster we can locate the nest(s). Watch Clemson’s video on how to make simple traps. If you don’t want to make your own, please donate clean empty 2-liter bottles by placing them in our mailbox. Every little bit helps. All of our bee yards will have a trap soon.

🐝 Bee Venom and Rheumatoid Arthritis 🐝
🧠 Arthritis affects millions worldwide, and its prevalence continues to rise. Since ancient times, bee venom therapy—known as Apis—has been practiced in civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and China to relieve conditions like arthritis and neuralgia.
In Korea, bee venom has also been traditionally used for immune-related disorders, showing its deep cultural and medical roots.
✨ Modern studies reveal that both bee and wasp venom can ease swelling, pain, and inflammation caused by arthritis. However, bee venom has an added advantage: it helps protect bones and cartilage by blocking inflammatory signaling pathways and reducing osteoclast formation.
🐝 Why does this matter? In arthritis, inflammatory triggers cause fibroblast-like synoviocytes to multiply abnormally, releasing substances that intensify inflammation. This makes them a key target in arthritis treatment.
🕯️ Research by Choe & Kim (2017) highlighted that bee venom can regulate bone metabolism and suppress osteoclast activity. Osteoclasts are cells that break down bone tissue—when overactive, they contribute to osteoporosis and joint damage.
By inhibiting osteoclasts, bee venom not only reduces inflammation but also slows down the destruction of joints—making it a promising natural therapy in managing arthritis.

Great news!

We are so very pleased to share that we received a proclamation from the State Governor, Henry McMaster!

What does this mean?
It confirms our Summer Conference as an event of state importance (which, of course, as beekeepers we know, but isn't it satisfying to know you are attending such a prestigious event!).

Share with your non-beekeeping friends and let them know how important your work is to the sustainability of our honeybees, agriculture and our food chain! 🐝
