Before cars existed, before most of America had paved roads at all, New Hampshire built one straight up the tallest peak in the Northeast.

The New Hampshire Legislature chartered the Mount Washington Road Company back in 1853, and construction started the following summer. It did not go smoothly. Funding ran dry in 1856 with the project barely halfway finished, and the whole effort stalled for years. A new company, the Mount Washington Summit Road Company, picked up the project in 1859 and finally pushed it to completion, and on August 8, 1861, the road opened to carriages, four years before the Civil War even ended and decades before the automobile existed.

It is still often billed as America's oldest man-made tourist attraction. The road carried horse-drawn carriages first, then early automobiles once they arrived, and today it still carries the famous "This Car Climbed Mt. Washington" bumper sticker tradition, more than 160 years after the first wheels ever turned onto it.
