Greetings! My name is Dr. Pat Suglia, and I am a retired chiropractor. While my chiropractic practice consisted mainly of family wellness chiropractic care and performing Department of Transportation physicals for professional drivers, I, along with my wife Becky, are safe people. Whether you are on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, the neurodiverse spectrum, or have nontraditional religious or spiritual bel

iefs, we are here to help you feel accepted and understood. My wife Becky is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a practicing witch. Together, we are Ordained Ministers heading up the EarthSpirit Interfaith Ministry. Although we are physically located just north of Reading, Pennsylvania, our outreach is global, and we are always available to be of help.

The first 352 DOT physicals I ever did as a DOT Certified Medical Examiner were done in my travels throughout northern NJ. The rest of them, 4,044 to be exact, were done in southeastern PA. It's no wonder why I still have dreams at night of doing them. But in my dreams, I'm encountering the most idiotic of idiots. Last night I dreamt a guy came into my office for a DOT physical, but he refused to show me his license or put his address on the exam form. Then he got mad at me for not doing his physical. I guess I'll always be haunted by the fact that I came across some real doozers. It's the ones who had respect and were enjoyable to talk to who kept me in it so long. Now that I am retired from practice, I focus on my duties as co-pastor of the EarthSpirit Interfaith Ministry and on being a competitive Scrabble player.

I just realized that tomorrow marks 31 years since I started living life with hypersomnia. Only for the past 5 months and 10 days now have I been in a state of near-remission. During the first few years, the cloudiness in my head was so bad that that is when I started depending on caffeine to at least get me up and going to a degree. I still didn't do so well with it, and, being in graduate school at the time, I had to repeat several classes and much internship time in order to compensate.. Yesterday I woke up with the same cloudiness and dependence on caffeine despite a near normal amount of sleep (hence the "near-remission'), and I went to the Scrabble club anyway despite how I felt. Doing really well despite how I originally felt let me know that what is going on mentally is probably secondary to what I feel like physically. Having been able to function otherwise during the past 31 years is what kept me going all this time, that is when I was and am physically able to be up and around.

In 1996, Eugene Shippen, MD said to me, "You have the disorder without the pain" making reference to what they called "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome." Dr. Shippen is the one who finally brought me from a near house-ridden state too being somewhat functional again to where I was able to complete graduate school. Nobody ever heard of Idiopathic Hypersomnia back then, which is what I've been calling it for the past few years now. But whatever it is, here I am living life ALMOST as normally as I was before April 10, 1995 despite how I feel both physically and mentally. And because of that, I have tremendous empathy for those who live with chronic illnesses, especially those who continue to be ignored and poopooed by their health care providers because of THEIR inability to relate.

During this holy time of year, I felt the need to write an official tenet of the EarthSpirit Interfaith Ministry. But then I see that we had already put it into words and have had it on the welcome page of our website all this time. So, I am reposting it here:

[Our mission is to create a community where all are welcome, where we honor the Divine as a manifestation of each one of us, and all who live with loving intent is community. We welcome diversity. We see the Divine as a manifestation of all that is, seen and unseen, members of all nations, races, religions, customs, genders and gender identities, sexual preferences, and neural and physical abilities. The Divine does not exist more in some and less in others. The Divine just is and is all-pervasive. The Divine is energy, and we move this energy with our deeds and intents. Let’s make them count for the betterment, support, and reverence of ourselves and our fellow creations as reflections of the Divine.]

At this point in time, our focus is on community support including education and less on any kind of "worship" ceremonies or formalities. Our church building effort maintains its focus on the acceptance and nonjudgment of those who may feel threatened, belittled, and ignored by current political and discriminatory efforts. Many great saints, especially those of Vedic traditions, have said, "God exists within you AS you," and we maintain this perspective despite the failings of the human ego. We are here and will remain here in the times to come to serve as a place of refuge and support. We may not always be outwardly visible in tumultuous times as these, but we are here. Blessed be.

Since today is the first day of autism awareness month, I'll take this opportunity to promote my books, two of which I wrote and the third which I an other authors with autism contributed to. As of now I have no plans on writing any other books. I'm not so blessed with inspiration as other authors who can write a book on a whim. On this website linked below you will also find videos of me talking about my books.

In this video, I talk about my first book "The Doctor Is In". This book presentation and signing took place on June 11, 2014 at the Barnes & Noble Bookseller in Princeton, New Jersey.

People who have known me since my teenage years know that one of my passions is playing the game Scrabble. It isn't just a game for fun. It is an education tool for learning many ways in which our great universe can be described. Words that are names of flowers, trees, scientific terms, astronomy terms, physical science terms, medical terms, and words related to any branch of science and arts imaginable are all great things to learn. I've been playing in competitive tournaments since I was 21 years old. I had stopped playing during the 90s and again during the 2010s simply because both opportunity to play was rare and I had other life events going on. In 2024 a new Scrabble club started in Allentown, PA. I had missed six months of attendance to that group while I recovered from my third stroke, and in just this past weekend I took part in my first tournament since October 2009. Although my performance in the tournament was not what I considered "up to s***f", that much is understandable because of all the health issues I've had during the past sixteen years. But now I see playing Scrabble as a tool to keep my mind sharp, and health issues will certainly continue to be a factor in how I perform. But I look at Scrabble as a great way of connecting with likeminded people, and I continue to look forward to opportunities to play since the Allentown club came to be.
