How do horses get electrolytes in the wild?

There are many ways wild horses get salt and electrolytes, through a lot of effort and many miles traveled. These horses will consume salt and minerals that build up on rocks, in the soil, mineral rich water, as well as through certain plants. The variety of plants found in the wild is much greater than what is available to domesticated horses today, who typically only consume single species forage, which is why supplementation is often needed. (This is also important for microbial diversity in the hind gut, but that’s a topic for another day).

It’s also reasonable to say that hot months take a larger toll on the well-being of wild horses, who generally only live an average of 15 years.
