This is our Driving Language Conversation Team!

"We're working on learning new conversation analyses that will help us understand more about communication in different settings. Learning these new analyses essentially means "coding" transcripts of conversations. These analyses help us learn about communication both on the word and sentence level. Right now, the transcripts we're working with come from the DrivingLang data set - conversations people have while driving (in a simulation), sitting in the passenger seat, etc. These people do not have aphasia. With these conversations, the analyses will help us see how driving (a distracting task) affects conversation."

This is our Language Analysis Team!

"We've collected language sample files from participants who edited a document (ex., highlight every "the") while also performing a language task. We only have samples from people without aphasia, but hope to collect from people with aphasia as well.
Eventually, we would like to see how the speech of people with aphasia is affected during distracting tasks. We hope to implement therapy techniques that help support people with aphasia because in daily life, speech co-occurs with distracting tasks."

This is our RC-CPT Qualitative Team! The long-term aim of this research project is to test the efficacy of a recently developed intervention for couples impacted by aphasia. The specific aims of this study are to:
(1) determine whether Relationship-Centered Communication Partner Training (RC-CPT) improves marital relationship and psychosocial outcomes above and beyond traditional Communication Partner Training (CPT) for couples impacted by aphasia
(2) determine whether RC-CPT improves communication similar to traditional CPT. They expect RC-CPT to result in significantly greater marital and psychosocial outcomes while still having a similar impact on communication

Meet the principle investigator of the HEAAL Lab, Dr. Tyson Harmon!

"I am interested in research that advances behavioral assessment and treatment of adult neurological communication disorders. Specifically, I am interested in understanding how language functioning and recovery after stroke is affected by mood and attention and in learning how to help people with aphasia transfer gains made in therapy to their everyday communication."
