That pop in your knee might sound alarming.

But hereโ€™s the important part: the sound itself usually isnโ€™t the problem.

Painless knee popping or clicking can happen because of gas bubbles in the joint, tendons or ligaments moving over bone, or normal joint movement.

What deserves more attention?
โ†’ Pain
โ†’ Swelling
โ†’ Locking or catching
โ†’ A feeling that your knee may give way
โ†’ A painful pop after a twist or fall

So donโ€™t judge your knee by the sound alone. Pay attention to what comes with it.

If your knee is popping AND hurting, getting it assessed can help you understand whatโ€™s actually happening.

Your knee makes a strange sound when you stand up.
POP.
You bend it again.
CLICK.
Should you be worried?
Not necessarily.

Painless popping and clicking can have completely harmless causes, including gas bubbles, tendons moving over bone, and normal joint movement.

The bigger question is: what comes with the sound?
Pain?
Swelling?
Locking or catching?
Instability?
A painful pop after a twist or fall?
Those are signs worth paying attention to.

Save this post so you know what to look for the next time your knee decides to make some noise.

Knee pain can make everyday movements feel harder than they should.

Walking. Standing up. Climbing stairs. Even getting off the couch.

The good news? You donโ€™t always need complicated equipment to start working on strength and mobility.

Here are 7 simple exercises covered by Synergy Rehab:

- Straight-leg raises
- Quad sets
- Sit-to-stands
- Glute bridges
- Standing hamstring curls
- Step-ups
- Heel raises

The key is to start slowly, focus on controlled movement, and stay consistent. Sharp or lasting pain is a reason to stop and get your knee assessed rather than simply pushing through it.

Your run felt fine. Then your knee started complaining later. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Post-run knee pain doesnโ€™t always mean youโ€™ve seriously injured your knee. Sometimes, your mileage, pace, hills, or overall training load simply increased faster than your body could handle.

Common reasons include runnerโ€™s knee, IT band irritation, patellar tendon overload, and sudden training spikes.

The goal isnโ€™t always to stop running completely. Itโ€™s about understanding what is irritating the knee, managing the load, rebuilding strength, and returning to running gradually.

If youโ€™re dealing with sharp pain, swelling, instability, or pain that keeps getting worse, itโ€™s worth getting assessed.

Your run felt fine. Then your knee started complaining later.

Post-run knee pain can have several causes. A sudden increase in mileage, faster pace, more hills, or simply doing more than your body is ready for can contribute.

Common issues include runnerโ€™s knee, IT band irritation, and tendon overload.

The goal isnโ€™t always to stop running. Managing your training load, building strength, and returning gradually can help you move toward running comfortably again.

If youโ€™re experiencing sharp pain, swelling, instability, or symptoms that keep getting worse, consider getting assessed.

Impingement, tendinitis, tear. If nobody has ever explained how these three relate, this is for you.

Impingement is a pinching pattern. Tendinitis is an irritated but intact tendon. A tear is actual damage through the tendon fibres. Simple enough on paper. In real shoulders they overlap constantly, because repeated pinching wears a tendon down, and a tendon that has been irritated long enough is easier to tear.

A more useful question than which label do I have is this one. Is your shoulder mainly telling you about pain, or mainly telling you about weakness? Irritation tends to speak in pain. Larger tears tend to speak in weakness. That is a clue rather than a verdict, and it is exactly the kind of thing we test properly rather than guess at.

And whichever label lands, the honest news is that the early plan looks similar across most of them. Settle it down, load the tendon gradually, get the shoulder blade working, and change what keeps provoking it. Surgery enters the conversation for large or recent traumatic tears, or when good rehab has genuinely not moved things forward.

Please get assessed promptly if you cannot lift your arm after a fall, if the shoulder locks or gives way, if there is significant swelling or visible deformity, if you feel numbness or pins and needles down the arm, or if pain comes with fever, redness and warmth.

The first shoulder exercise we usually give involves no movement at all.

It is called an isometric external rotation, which sounds far more complicated than it is. Stand beside a doorframe, elbow at your side and bent to about ninety degrees, then press the back of your hand gently into the frame. Nothing moves. Hold for around five seconds, relax, and repeat eight to ten times.

People are often surprised that a hold with no movement helps, but gentle isometrics frequently take the edge off tendon pain, which is exactly what you want before you start asking a tendon to do more. From there the plan builds gradually into resistance work and then into strength you can use for reaching, lifting and sleeping.

These numbers are general examples for healthy adults. Your shoulder gets its own version once someone has actually assessed it. A mild working ache during the hold is fine. Sharp pain means back off.

Please get assessed promptly if you cannot lift your arm after a fall, if the shoulder locks or gives way, if there is significant swelling or visible deformity, if you feel numbness or pins and needles down the arm, or if pain comes with fever, redness and warmth.

Three different diagnoses. Very often, the same shoulder.

People arrive having collected labels from a friend, a search bar or a quick appointment, and nobody has ever explained how those labels relate to each other. So here it is plainly. Impingement is a pinching pattern, where the tendon gets compressed as you lift the arm. Tendinitis is an irritated but intact tendon, usually from doing too much too often. A tear is actual damage through the tendon fibres.

They are not rivals. They sit on a spectrum, and they overlap constantly. Repeated impingement can wear a tendon down over time, and a tendon that has been irritated for long enough is a tendon that is easier to tear. That is why one shoulder can honestly carry more than one of these names at once.

Here is the part that matters for you. Outside of large or recent traumatic tears, the early plan looks remarkably similar across all three. Settle the irritation, rebuild strength gradually, restore how the shoulder blade moves, and change the habits that keep provoking it. What decides your plan is not the word on your report. It is how your shoulder moves, where the strength gives way, and which positions reproduce your pain.

It is National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, and this is the whole point of an assessment. Not a label. A direction.

Please get assessed promptly if you cannot lift your arm after a fall, if the shoulder locks or gives way, if there is significant swelling or visible deformity, if you feel numbness or pins and needles down the arm, or if pain comes with fever, redness and warmth.

Come and find out which one you are actually dealing with.

Your shoulder is telling you something. Pain and weakness are two different sentences.

Pain with reaching and lifting usually points towards irritation. Weakness, and especially struggling to hold the arm up, can point towards a larger tear. It is one of the quickest ways to think about what is going on, and it is far more useful than trying to self diagnose from a search result.

The honest caveat is that these overlap constantly. Impingement, tendinitis and tears sit on a spectrum and regularly share the same shoulder, and a scan alone can mislead because tears show up in pain free shoulders too. So we test rather than guess. Movement, strength, and the exact positions that reproduce your pain.

Please get assessed promptly if you cannot lift your arm after a fall, if the shoulder locks or gives way, if there is significant swelling or visible deformity, if you feel numbness or pins and needles down the arm, or if pain comes with fever, redness and warmth.

If your shoulder has been talking for more than a couple of weeks, come and let us listen properly.
