🚨 Are you really getting what you’re paying for?
A recent study from UC Davis has raised some serious questions about processed foods marketed as being made with avocado oil.
Researchers tested 54 processed food products labeled as containing avocado oil—including chips, mayonnaise, and salad dressings—and found that 48 of the 54 products (89%) had oil compositions inconsistent with authentic avocado oil.
The results were especially concerning:
🥑 93% of the chips tested
🥑 71% of the mayonnaise products tested
🥑 100% of the salad dressings tested
The researchers used chemical markers, including fatty acid and sterol profiles, to evaluate whether the oils matched the composition of authentic avocado oil.
One of the bigger concerns is that avocado oil has not been subject to the same level of standards, testing, and oversight as olive oil. This can create opportunities for lower-cost oils to enter the supply chain while consumers pay a premium for products marketed around the perceived benefits of avocado oil.
As consumers, we deserve transparency. If a product prominently promotes avocado oil as a premium ingredient, we should be able to trust that the product actually contains authentic avocado oil.
This is an important reminder to read labels, ask questions, and look for brands that prioritize ingredient transparency and third-party verification.
What do you think? Should there be stronger standards and testing requirements for avocado oil used in packaged foods?
