Over supply of breastmilk may seem like something to strive for, but it’s not.
I often hear people glorify over suppliers and take extreme measures to try and up their supply.
People who have an over supply are often shamed when they say they wish they didn’t have an oversupply.
Over suppliers are often told they should be thankful and that they are lucky to have that much milk flow..
Let’s talk about this for a moment.
Many women believe they don’t produce enough breastmilk when they can’t pump any out or they only get half an ounce or so. This is not true at all.
It is completely normal to produce just enough to feed your baby and nothing more.
That is a perfect and balanced supply!
Mom groups and social media tend to create the illusion that you’re not doing something right or your body isn’t working right.
In reality, your body is doing everything perfectly!
I personally struggled with an over supply for about six months. It created a lot of different issues for
Aspen and I.
Fortunately, I never had to deal with Mastitis or clogged ducts, but I have helped many women through these things due to oversupply.
At first, I thought it was awesome that I could pump 10-13 ounces out of each b**b even after an entire nursing session… 10-13 ounces!? INSANE. 😵💫
I quickly realized how NOT awesome it was.
My breasts never felt empty. They were sore 24/7. I leaked all day everyday. Aspen would gag and choke while nursing because my milk came out way to fast. Aspen struggled with spitting up a lot and reflux.
He was defined as a “colic baby”.
“Some babies just have colic” I was told.
WRONG. There is always a root cause.
After about six months of struggling, I decided to stop pumping.
I only nursed him.
Within weeks my milk regulated and I no longer had an over supply. All of his symptoms went away.
No one told me I shouldn’t be pumping in the beginning.
I never saw a lactation professional because His latch was perfect and I didn’t even know oversupply was an issue due to all the praise over supply gets in mom groups.
This is dangerous and harmful talk.
