Over supply of breastmilk may seem like something to strive for, but it’s not.
I often hear people glorify over suppliers and take extreme measures to try and up their supply.
People who have an over supply are often shamed when they say they wish they didn’t have an oversupply.
Over suppliers are often told they should be thankful and that they are lucky to have that much milk flow..

Let’s talk about this for a moment.
Many women believe they don’t produce enough breastmilk when they can’t pump any out or they only get half an ounce or so. This is not true at all.
It is completely normal to produce just enough to feed your baby and nothing more.
That is a perfect and balanced supply!
Mom groups and social media tend to create the illusion that you’re not doing something right or your body isn’t working right.
In reality, your body is doing everything perfectly!

I personally struggled with an over supply for about six months. It created a lot of different issues for
Aspen and I.
Fortunately, I never had to deal with Mastitis or clogged ducts, but I have helped many women through these things due to oversupply.
At first, I thought it was awesome that I could pump 10-13 ounces out of each b**b even after an entire nursing session… 10-13 ounces!? INSANE. 😵‍💫
I quickly realized how NOT awesome it was.
My breasts never felt empty. They were sore 24/7. I leaked all day everyday. Aspen would gag and choke while nursing because my milk came out way to fast. Aspen struggled with spitting up a lot and reflux.
He was defined as a “colic baby”.
“Some babies just have colic” I was told.
WRONG. There is always a root cause.

After about six months of struggling, I decided to stop pumping.
I only nursed him.
Within weeks my milk regulated and I no longer had an over supply. All of his symptoms went away.

No one told me I shouldn’t be pumping in the beginning.
I never saw a lactation professional because His latch was perfect and I didn’t even know oversupply was an issue due to all the praise over supply gets in mom groups.
This is dangerous and harmful talk.

The breast crawl!
Babies know exactly what to do!
They are born with the instinct to crawl to the breast immediately after birth.
So incredible, don’t you think!?

What helped you get through labor, birth and the immediate postpartum period?

The things that helped me the most were

✨ Meditation

✨ A dim, quiet and calm space

✨ Straddling the toilet

✨ My husband holding a fan over me for 3 hours straight! 🤣

Your fear and lack of knowledge is profitable and you are not the one benefiting from it.
The medical industrial complex is.

About 1 in 3 women who walk into an American hospital to give birth end up with a cesarean.
This is not normal.
This is not safe.
This is not healthy.

How you birth matters.
How you birth will effect you and your baby for life.
How you birth will effect generations to come.

Educating yourself on the physiological process of birth is the #1 thing you can do to prevent unnecessary intervention and preventable trauma.

Did your OB/midwife go over all of this with you?
Did your provider encourage you to research this and other routine procedures and medications done/given at birth?

ALL providers should be required to give ALL information to you so that you can make informed decisions.
Unfortunately, they do not have to share all the information.
This is why it is so important to thoroughly interview your provider before hiring them.

Do you know why eye ointment (Erythromycin) is given at birth?

It is offered because there were babies being born with ophthalmia neonatorum, which is a strain of pink eye caused by ghonnorea and chlamydia.

Pink eye.... we’re pre-treating every single baby for pink eye.

If mom doesn't have either of those, the ointment is basically pointless and nonbeneficial with potential of dangerous side effects...

Most expecting mothers are tested at their first prenatal appointment for either of the aforementioned STDs.

Did you know they also give it to C-Section babies that NEVER come in contact with their mother’s potential STD?

🛑 Risks of erythromycin: eye irritation, CLOGGED TEAR DUCTS, prevents oxygen from getting to baby's eyes, JAUNDICE, chemical conjunctivitis (pink eye), blurred vision that may interfere with bonding (super important in the first moments/hours), contributes to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, has a 20% failure rate, possibility of allergic reaction.

🛑 Risks of refusing erythromycin: should mother have an undetected STD then baby has possibility of developing TREATABLE pink eye.

Giving the ointment routinely contributes to over-prescription of antibiotics. This "just in case" medical routine is a reason why we have so many strains of resistant bacteria.

Many new moms have been told at the hospital that their child could go blind if they didn’t give their new baby the ointment.

✨ Incredible ✨

“When pregnant, the cells of the baby migrate into the mothers bloodstream and then circle back into the baby, it’s called “fetal-maternal microchimerism”.

For 41 weeks, the cells circulate and merge backwards and forwards, and after the baby is born, many of these cells stay in the mother’s body, leaving a permanent imprint in the mothers tissues, bones, brain, and skin, and often stay there for decades. Every single child a mother has afterwards will leave a similar imprint on her body, too.

Even if a pregnancy doesn't go to full term or if you have an abortion, these cells still migrate into your bloodstream.

Research has shown that if a mother's heart is injured, fetal cells will rush to the site of the injury and change into different types of cells that specialize in mending the heart.

The baby helps repair the mother, while the mother builds the baby.

How cool is that?

This is often why certain illnesses vanish while pregnant.

It’s incredible how mothers bodies protect the baby at all costs, and the baby protects & rebuilds the mother back - so that the baby can develop safely and survive.

Think about crazy cravings for a moment. What was the mother deficient in that the baby made them crave?

Studies have also shown cells from a fetus in a mothers brain 18 years after she gave birth. How amazing is that?”

If you’re a mom you know how you can intuitively feel your child even when they are not there….Well, now there is scientific proof that moms carry them for years and years even after they have given birth to them.

I find this to be so very beautiful.

This month is miscarriage and pregnancy awareness month.

Today marks only 4 weeks since my miscarriage, but it feels like forever.
I am so grateful we decided to wait to publicly announce this pregnancy.
I had no idea the level of grief I was about to endure. We tried for months for this baby.
I am so glad I didn't have to explain to people that I lost my baby when they asked "How are you feeling? Has the morning sickness set in yet?
I would have just lost it.
I still can hardly talk about it.
I've been avoiding people because I don't want to lie when they ask me how things are going. Most people are just not mentally prepared or interested in having that conversation.
So, I prefer to suffer in silence until its not so hard to talk about.
Miscarriage and pregnancy loss is such an intimate experience.
Unique to only you.
Death literally inhabits your body.
Everytime I think of my womb space I think about how someone died in there. I don't recognize my body right now. I feel so disconnected from myself.
When I place my hand over my uterus it still feels like there should be a baby there.
Having to go though a mini labor and birth a fetus, knowing it is dead, is a whole other level of heartache.

I had really intense contractions for 2 days before I birthed the fetus. I could hardly care for Aspen, but all he wanted to do was nurse for days.
I held him and cried a lot.
When he nursed it brought on really strong contractions. If you have ever given birth and breastfed the first few days, you'll know the contractions I am talking about.
I believe Aspen knew something was happening in my body and he instinctually nursed so frequently to help my body through this process.
My body knew exactly what to do.
It did it with out intervention or interruption.
I experienced true surrender and trust in my body.
The ultimate sacrifice.
To be a vessel for a little soul to so quickly and fiercely come and go. To have a postpartum mind and body, breasts engorged with milk for a new baby and no newborn baby to hold or feed.
Intense.
Intense, that is an understatement.
There truly are no words.

The way you and your baby experience birth will have a life long, even generational, impact. Invest in your birth team.
Do your research.
Ask ALL the questions.
Change providers if they don't support and respect how you want to birth.

You have so many options!

Did you feel your water break? 💧
How long after did you go into labor?
What was your experience?

~ My experience ~

Before learning a lot of the things I know now, I ended up deciding to go in and get induced at 42 weeks after I had been planning for a home birth. Aspen wasn't moving much and I was concerned.
After about 15 hours of laboring I had a midwife break my water for me and nothing came out! 😮
Sometimes babies head is so low and sitting right on top of your cervix that their head basically acts like a plug!
I only felt a small gush when I pushed him out!

Home birth after cesarean with a breech baby!
Incredible!! ✨
What a huge difference it makes finding a provider that supports the way you want to birth your baby.
If you find out that your baby is breech, you have options! In most cases, a cesarean is not your only option. I suggest finding a midwife who is specifically trained in delivering breech babies and a great doula!
