Before nursing, he spent 20 years in engineering and IT.

Then everything changed. Dr. Ife Muyiwa-Ojo didn't take a traditional path to nursing, and that's exactly what makes him an extraordinary teacher.

Today he's an Associate Professor at St. John's College of Nursing, bringing experience from the ICU, trauma, psychiatry, and the tech industry into every classroom, simulation, and conversation with his students.

His message to nurses and students everywhere: "The glass ceiling is broken. We really have to keep moving, and we have to get more education so that we can serve our patients better, serve the profession better, and be good mentors to upcoming students."

That belief drove him to found the Men Engaged in Nursing (M.E.N.) program — creating space for male nurses to grow, lead, and belong in a profession that is better when everyone is at the table.

June is Men's Health Month, and nurses are at the center of it.

Nurses are often the first person a patient really talks to about their health. They answer questions, explain what a diagnosis actually means, connect people to the right resources, and follow up when life gets in the way of good intentions.

For men, who statistically tend to put off preventive care longer than they should, that relationship matters. A nurse who asks the right question at the right time can move someone from "I'll deal with it later" to "let's handle this now." That is not a small thing.

It is also one of the most rewarding parts of the work. Nursing is not just clinical skill. It is the ability to meet people where they are and help them take better care of themselves.

Nurses do a lot of things. One of the most important is helping people actually take care of themselves.

During Men's Health Month, that role is worth highlighting. Men tend to delay preventive care more than they should, and nurses are often the ones who bridge that gap. They educate, follow up, and ask the questions that move someone from putting it off to doing something about it.

Nursing school asks a lot of you. At St. John’s College of Nursing, you do not have to do it alone.

Student Kayla shared what that support has meant to her:

“The professors really do want you to succeed. I feel like at bigger nursing colleges, you don’t have that one-on-one relationship with the professors. Any of us could go up to any of the professors and say, ‘Hey, I’m having an issue,’ whether it’s school or work or life or whatever, and they would guide you through it.”

At St. John’s, students are known, supported, and guided by faculty who care about their success inside and beyond the classroom.

Today is International Nurses Day, a reminder of the profession’s history and the legacy first shaped by Florence Nightingale that we are proud to carry forward at St. John’s College of Nursing.

Before St. John’s was a college, it was a promise.

In 1886, our German founding Franciscan Sisters arrived in Springfield with a mission to care for the sick and vulnerable. They understood that caring well required knowledge, discipline, compassion, and someone willing to teach the next person how to carry that work forward.

For 140 years, St. John’s has prepared nurses to serve with skill, courage, patience, and heart.

To our alumni, students, faculty, clinical partners, and every nurse who has dedicated their life to this profession: thank you for answering the call to care.
