Who are you without your titles and credentials?

This is such a powerful question, and one that too few of us think to ask ourselves.

We get so caught up in the work we've done, and the achievements that came with it, we forget who the person is underneath.

She's the one we need to remember, because at the end of the day she's the one that matters most.

So, who are you with all the accolades stripped away?

I can't even begin to tell you how many new doctors that are in soul crushing medical school debt come to find that the dream they were promised, was just that... a dream.

It was a marketing ploy, and target was young, passionate college students looking to make a difference in the world.

Medicine is beautiful, and treating patients is something I appreciate each and every day, but the dream that's falsely sold to medical students is one of the biggest reasons so many doctors are miserable.

We have to do a better job of explaining to students the reality of the situation. That you'll be in a massive amount of debt, working excruciating hours, often feeling unsupported by the system you work inside, and dealing with rightfully frustrated patients that aren't feeling listened to.

But here's the thing... it's changing. Slowly, but surely, doctors are finding their voice and the courage to step outside the "dream" we were sold in medical school, and taking our own path to better work-life balance and patient care.

This is the reason I love having these conversations with other doctors. When you think like a scientist (which doctors have stopped doing), medicine becomes the pursuit of answers by testing hypotheses.

Take viruses for example. Some of them don't go away. They live in your immune system for the rest of your life, and for some, that's all that happens. It sits there, doing nothing, for you entire life. But for others, it can impact you like you wouldn't believe.

Esptein-Barr virus is one of those viruses. You probably know it from things like mono, but what if it's actually the thing that makes recovering from other illnesses harder? What if it's giving you long COVID? What if EBV is responsible for some of the issues perimenopausal women are experiencing?

All great questions, and the exact kind of thing we as doctors need to dive deeper into.

There's so much pressure to conform inside medicine, whether that's when you're in medical school, residency, or elsewhere.

When you're expected to simply "do as your told", the heart of what it means to practice medicine is lost... the science.

Most doctors came from the sciences and are built to have questioning minds, yet we're told from practically day one that questioning our superiors isn't allowed, and it's medicine from within.

How can doctors be expected to find solutions when we're not allowed to even peek outside the box?

Many women feel completely unheard by healthcare providers when it comes to perimenopause, often being dismissed if their periods are considered "normal."

When providers aren't trained on perimenopause, it's easy for them to dismiss real and important symptoms.

There needs to be better health education for physicians so they can recognize women's health concerns for what they are... valid issues.

I don't bring this up because I'm looking for sympathy.

I bring this up because it's easy to see how exhaustion feeds the current state of our medical system.

When physicians are tired and out of touch from their personal lives, they can't possibly be the physician a patient needs. They can't even be the physician they know themselves to be.

So the question becomes, how can we as physicians reclaim more of our personal lives so we can give the patients in our exam rooms the attention they deserve?

I know how I feel about it, but what do you think?

Residency doesn't teach OB-GYN's about women's s*xual health issues, like low libido, or**sm problems, arousal, and painful s*x.

But every OB-GYN runs into the EXACT same issue the moment they start actually seeing patients... you can't separate s*xual health issues from perimenopause and menopause.

My friend and colleague Dr. Becky Lynn and I had a great conversation where we talked about the failings of the current system. Check out the full conversation on Spotify and YouTube!

There are over 200 causes for women losing their hair! This absolutely blew me away when I heard Dr. Nancy say it. 200??

I've heard countless women over the years talk about hair loss, sometimes pulling globs of hair out in the shower or from their brush. But never in my wildest dreams would I have thought there could be so many causes.

Yet it also makes perfect sense. Ponytails, nervous hair pulling, genetics, etc.

This is why we can't allow ourselves to ignore the signs just because it might not seem "that bad."

There are real solutions out there that can make a huge difference in our lives.

A lot of women have misconceptions about their hair loss. When we compare ourselves to men, it's easy to see why. It's less noticeable and just doesn't feel like it's bad enough to do something about.

But that's not true. Just because we might not experience it to the same degree as men doesn't mean it isn't a problem, and it definitely isn't something we have to accept as normal.

There are real options for us, and we don't need to be scared of exploring them.

For high-functioning women experiencing hair loss, especially during perimenopause, it's more than just a cosmetic concern. Understanding your hair health is essential to finding effective solutions, and the first step is understanding that what you consider to be hair loss might not be the same for someone else, and vice versa.
