What if one of the most powerful tools in dementia care isn't something you can see?

This week in our Calm On Purpose series, we're exploring the emotional environment of caregiving. While we often focus on routines, communication techniques, and physical surroundings, the feelings we bring into an interaction may have an even greater impact.

For people living with dementia, emotions are often felt long after words are forgotten. A calm voice, a reassuring presence, and a compassionate approach can help create safety, reduce distress, and strengthen connection.

There is something deeply meaningful about gathering in a place of faith to support those who care for our most vulnerable.

This afternoon, we begin a brand new Dementia Life caregiver group at Most Sacred Heart in Eureka, and we’ll start by praying this beautiful caregiver prayer together.

Because perhaps faith is never more visible than in the quiet, everyday acts of caregiving - in the patience, the sacrifice, the gentle touch, the decision to love again and again.

To all the caregivers: may you find strength for today, grace for the difficult moments, joy in the small victories, and peace in knowing that your love matters more than you could ever imagine. You are seen, you are valued, and you are never walking this journey alone. 💙

Stop Testing. Start Cueing.

One of the most powerful shifts we can make in dementia care is moving from asking, "Can they remember?" to asking, "How can I help them succeed?"

As dementia progresses, everyday tasks can become more difficult—not because a person is unwilling, but because the brain may need more support from the environment.

Small changes can make a big difference:
• Keep important items visible and easy to find
• Use labels, signs, photos, and visual reminders
• Create predictable daily routines

Remember: Don't test the memory. Support the success.

“Celebrating the Joy of Intergenerational Connection”

Today, in honor of Children’s Day, we’re celebrating the beautiful connections that happen when generations come together.
At Dementia Life STL, we believe meaningful connection happens in the simplest moments shared between generations.

In this blog, activity directors, families, caregivers, and care professionals will find easy, meaningful intergenerational activities to support engagement with individuals living with dementia, including crafts, music, storytelling, and shared experiences that spark joy, comfort, and connection.

These activities are designed to be simple to implement, adaptable for different abilities, and focused on what matters most—presence, participation, and connection.

Calm on Purpose: The Senses Matter 🌿

For a person living with dementia, a noisy, cluttered, or uncomfortable environment can increase stress and make daily life more difficult. Small sensory changes—like reducing background noise, improving lighting, creating cozy spaces, and using familiar scents—can help promote comfort and calm.
