August is Autoinflammatory Disease Awareness Month! I❤️someone with (SJIA) Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis also known as Still’s disease. It is considered autoinflammatory versus autoimmune due to the systemic (system wide) nature of the disease. One main characteristic is a daily fever that tends to spike in the afternoon. This is often accompanied by a salmon colored rash and joint pain. Research is currently being done to determine a genetic cause for pediatric and adult onset of Still’s. For caregivers, one of the biggest worries with having a child with SJIA is that they can develop a life threatening condition called (MAS) macrophage activation syndrome. MAS is when your innate immune system takes too much of a good thing and overreacts by flooding your body with pro-inflammatory cytokines. This is known as a “cytokine storm” and not only can damage organs, but is also considered life threatening.

Unclassified means that the patient presents with autoinflammatory disease symptoms, but doctors are still unsure which one. An immunologist or rheumatologist will use genetics, other labs, imaging, symptom presentation and family history to help solve the case🧐
