You don't NEED any tools to practice yoga.
They can give you access or increase the effort.
We sell tools that we've tried, tested, and that have lasted through years of use.

We teach Real Yoga. Sometimes that requires the use of external tools. Use the Right ones and you'll develop practices that benefit your body, energy, emotions and mind.

Want to know more about how to use tools for the practice?
We include them in every class.

Asana isn't intended to be a performance, pose or work out.
We practice asana to develop awareness, understanding and control.
We use our bodies, and sometimes tools, to gain understanding of how our bodies move, or are limited. We establish an intention of removal of knots, restrictions and rigidity to allow for freedom, ease and contentment.

Every asana is an opportunity for sthira sukham asanam: establishment of a steady, easy seat.

Practice asana not to look good, but rather to discover your Self.

Asana
A Vedic Sanskrit word आसन (Asana) means "seat" (not "posture")
योग (Yoga), which comes from root word युज् (Path) implies "Path of Wisdom" (not "exercise").

The objective of asana is to quiet the distractions of the body to help the practitioner tread the "path of wisdom" because a body that is directed well can allow for the mind to quiet and provides access to brahma (the absolute).

What does asana mean to you?
What has it taught you?

Establish cleanliness to begin your practice. From Patanjali to Pattabhi Jois, the explanation of how to begin includes a clearing of that which distracts us from beginning. Hatha yoga begins with asana as the kriya: body movements with cleansing practices. Asana: "Ah-sah-nah," is explained as 11 positions utilized to begin the clearing process; removing toxins and helping to direct attention and focus.

What has been taken from this practice is the positions. What is being lost is the intention. Asana is not a practice of fitness or demonstration. It is one that prepares us for the real work: becoming aware of our selves.

When you book a private session we always honor your request whether it be for an active vinyasa asana practice, a focus upon beginner movements, partnered positions or even anatomical alignment. We'll vary the practice to align with the needs of everyone participating. Your friends who are pregnant, injured or need a little more support will feel as though they can access every aspect of the practice and feel included in every moment.

A yoga session is a great way to involve everyone when you're celebrating, reconnecting or just getting away for a moment.

What you say and how you say it can profoundly change how others perceive you. Yoga is an ancient practice that continues to be practiced throughout India and the world. The practices and philosophies are described in multiple texts, in Sanskrit. Not to use this language is to lose the roots of the practice and, ultimately the intentions with which it was originally applied.

We're shifting our focus from asana to jalpana. While we have always included the Sanskrit names of the practices, we'll now learn about the value and power using the correct words and pronunciation holds.

We've spent half of this year focusing upon the physical; addressing the Hatha yoga practices. Now, we begin to shift toward Raja yoga: the mindfulness aspects. To do so, we start with the words that have been used to describe the practice.

Sanskrit, sure it's an over five thousand year old language that would be difficult to converse in today. It's also the language of yoga. Using Sanskrit is valuable when practicing and teaching. The words, when utilized properly and spoken well, shifts energy and honors the traditions of the practice.

The Sprinter snow and rain has shifted our morning session indoors today.
As with all things, this is temporary, and we know how to be flexible.

It's moments like this when we're reminded of how our practices prepare us for that which we can't control. Every attempt we make to access an asana, direct breath, focus our thoughts or shift energy is an attempt to control. The better we become at directing ourselves, the more comfortable we become with change that is always happening everywhere.

You can choose how you think and behave. Keep practicing to do so authentically.

Living in the mountains requires flexibility, patience and resilience.
On Saturday we were swimming in the lake. On Wednesday we had our galoshes and mittens on.

It's almost as if Tahoe is offering viprttakarani: an inverted perspective. The inconsistent conditions are a reminder that you can plan and prepare, you can expect and want, but you also need to detach and allow for change to occur.

As we practice inversions we prepare our bodies, minds and energy to move. As we attempt the asana we have to be accepting of instability, unsteadiness and ignorance. We have to detach from the desire to look a certain way. We have to always be ready to fall (and fail).

Keep practicing. Continue to try. Remain consistent, persistent and dedicated to practicing yoga everywhere.
