August means our gardens are bursting, and we are busy preserving the harvest 🌱🌱🌱 Elderberry syrup is a popular natural remedy known for its potential health benefits. Packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, elderberry syrup is often used to support the immune system, particularly during cold and flu season. It’s also high in Vitamin C and makes a refeshing mocktail when mixed with sparkling water! Ingredients

We’re harvesting Calendula for a full moon solstice tallow balm ☀️☀️☀️

From …

🍄Happy♥️Full🍓Strawberry 🌝 Moon!
Throughout history, our ancestors recognized the capacity for the full moon to draw up tides, bring on growth spurts in plants, and alter fluids in the brain and body that make some people ‘lunatic’, and others go into childbirth. The Strawberry Moon in June is know for bringing on the late spring harvest of strawberries, and a season of good old fashioned strawberry festivals and summer picnics. Among gardeners and farmers, each full moon was seen as a time to harvest seasonal herbs, seeds and produce that would be laden with juice, sap and essential oils that could make them more potent when preserved for later use. The full moon offers a perfect time to hang and dry overgrown herbs and botanicals to make full moon herbal teas that you can use throughout the seasons. As for me, I am gathering and drying abundant tea and culinary herbs including: mint, lemon balm, lavender, roses, rosebuds, thyme, sage, lovage, calendula.
...and don’t forget to get out and celebrate under the light of the full moon on this first full summer night! What will you be gathering?

Last week, we harvested lots of Nettle for you in the Avena gardens. Here Tanvi and Pratt prepare to weigh a big sheet full of fresh nettle while Rose cuts nettle for Avena’s fresh nettle tincture and drying for tea.

Nettle (Urtica dioica) is one of the most nourishing herb and food sources on the planet, and a powerful teacher and healer for people who have experiences trauma and for folks who are highly sensitive. We like to drink a quart of fresh nettle leaf tea daily in spring for about a month as a favorite tonic for renewing energy.

This herbaceous perennial is hardy to USDA zones 2-10 and thrives in moist, fertile soil high in organic matter and in old compost piles or barnyards. Nettle improves soil fertility, adding nutrients to soil and improving soil texture. Prefers partial to full sun. On our farm, we place tree bark chips between rows of nettles to maintain walking paths.

You can read more about growing, preparing and using Nettle and many more plants in Deb’s newest book, “The Healing Garden”, available on our website.
