Somehow two years have passed since I welcome my baby boy into this world.
Although parts of this birth didn’t go according to plan, I truly look back on it with fondness and happiness. I pushed my body to its limits, and I’m so proud of myself for it.
I will forever be grateful for my birth team, which includes my husband, my doula, my midwife and her apprentice, and midwifery assistant. They remained calm when things got chaotic and scary, and never once let me or my husband see panic. They respected me and my wishes, and when plans had to change they communicated with both authority and compassion.
I know homebirth is not for everyone, nor do I think it should be. I don’t talk about it a ton on here, because I know it’s not what the majority of my clientele seek. The fact is, not everyone is a good candidate for homebirth. There is also truth in the fact that not all homebirth midwives are created equal.
However, homebirth is a valid and safe choice for many and I believe with everything inside of me it should remain an option for those that want it.
I also strongly believe that everyone deserves to have the love and support during their pregnancy and birth that I received during my own. I had to switch providers at 30 weeks to make it happen, but the care I received made it worth every extra penny and headache.
I think my son’s birthday will always bring up a lot of emotions. Not just because he’s growing up, but because of the work I had to put in to have such an empowering birth experience. It opened my eyes to the value of choosing the right people to be in the room with you when your baby is born.
If you’re questioning whether you should switch providers or hire a doula (or both) it probably means you should. YOU ARE WORTH IT 🫶
