There has been a lot of talk about toasters lately. We don’t mess with toasters at the South Dakota Highway Patrol but we have been known to utilize a Matchbox car or two from time to time.

Believe it or not, matchbox cars can be a valuable tool when investigating crashes. Our troopers use them to re-create/demonstrate vehicle positions, movements, points of impact and other details as we work to piece together what happened during a crash.

Sometimes the best way to explain a complicated crash scene is to pull a couple little cars out and show what happened 🙂.

There are other impactful reasons we keep them around. When children are involved in a crash or other critical incidents, a Matchbox car can provide a welcome distraction during what may be a very frightening and confusing experience. Giving a child something to hold or focus on can help bring a little normalcy to an otherwise difficult situation.

So you may not find a toaster in a South Dakota highway patrol car, you might find a few matchbox cars.
