Watching Your Surroundings

Wild animals need plenty of space - staying at least 100 yards away is a good rule. Regular talking or gentle noises while hiking will alert animals to your presence. If you encounter wildlife, the safest response is to back away slowly while keeping them in view. All food should be stored in sealed containers to avoid attracting animals to your location.

Each trail system uses specific colors and patterns for their markers. A good practice is to remember the last marker you passed and any notable natural features nearby. Regular map checks at trail junctions help prevent wrong turns, while warning signs alert hikers to hazards like steep cliffs or loose rocks.

Hiking is a great way to explore nature, improve physical fitness, and relieve stress. However, even a short day hike can turn dangerous without proper preparation.

With miles of trails all around us, there is no better time to explore our surroundings than now!

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced hiker, following key safety tips can help ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Plan Ahead: Research your trail before heading out. Know the distance, difficulty level, elevation changes, and expected weather. Always let someone know your itinerary and expected return time. Stick to marked trails and avoid shortcuts.

Pack the Essentials: Carry enough water, snacks, a map or hand-held GPS, a first-aid kit, flashlight, extra layers, sun protection, and a fully charged phone. Even on short hikes unexpected delays or injuries can occur.

Dress Appropriately: Wear moisture-wicking clothes or UV-rated clothing and sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes. Dress in layers so you can adjust as temperatures change.
Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Watch for trail markers and keep an eye on the terrain. Slippery rocks, loose gravel, and steep drop offs can lead to accidents. Be mindful of wildlife. Never feed animals or approach them and know what to do if you come across a bear or snake!

Pace Yourself: Don’t overexert. Take breaks, hydrate regularly, and listen to your body. Fatigue can lead to poor judgment and injuries.
Check the Weather: Weather can change quickly, especially in mountainous areas. Be prepared to turn back if conditions worsen. Hiking is a rewarding experience when done safely. By preparing properly and respecting the trail, you can enjoy the beauty of nature while minimizing risks. Always prioritize safety! It is the key to many happy returns to the outdoors.

Bring a Camera: You never know what you’ll find along the trail: wildlife, a scenic vista, an old cabin. A camera can help preserve the memory of a day on the trail.

NO RISK. NO REWARD. 🥾

Life is full of opportunities and challenges, and sometimes you have to be willing to take a risk. No risk, no reward. This past Saturday, an AMAZING group of adventurous people decided to take a risk at HIKING! What was supposed to be a 4.5-mile hike turned into a 7-MILE ADVENTURE!

These hikers pushed themselves through tall, wet grass, hills, pastures, nature trails, uneven terrain, ditches, rocky climbs up and down paths, 85-degree heat, railroad crossings, and so much more. And yes… it sounds like A LOT because IT WAS!

But here's the thing… THEY DID IT! 💪🏾

All 90–100 hikers successfully completed the hike. Not one person gave up. They pushed through the heat, the terrain, the unexpected extra miles, and every challenge that came their/our way.

That accomplishment is more than just finishing a hike. It’s a reminder that sometimes we don't know what we're capable of until we're willing to step outside of our comfort zone and take that first step.

4.5 miles became 7 miles.
A challenge became an accomplishment.
A group of strangers became a community.
And a Saturday morning became a memory that will last forever. ❤️

To everyone who showed up, pushed through, encouraged someone else, and crossed that finish line, SALUTE! 🫡

You didn't just go hiking…

YOU TOOK A RISK.
YOU ACCEPTED THE CHALLENGE.
AND YOU GOT THE REWARD.

Until the next adventure… KEEP MOVING / Urban Hikers Tallahassee / Join Us
