The original cold cream was made from roses.

Galen's formula, nearly two thousand years old, was beeswax, water and oil of roses. And oil of roses meant petals steeped in oil, in one ancient recipe seven times over, with fresh petals each round.

There was a reason for the oil. Much of a fresh rose's scent is a molecule called phenylethyl alcohol, and it dissolves readily in water. Distill roses and most of it leaves with the rosewater. Oil holds onto it.

Our Rose Renewal Crème starts the old way: garden roses, steeped whole in oil for weeks. It is one of three crèmes now together in the Garden Crème Gift Set.

Every product InVine makes has one plant in common, and it is not the one on the front of the jar.

It is there because it behaves well in oil and because it sits under everything else without taking the lead.

A balm is poured, not scooped.

It leaves the beaker warm and liquid, thin enough to find the corners of the jar.

Every jar in the row is filled from the same pour, in one pass.

Then it is left alone. As it cools it stops being a liquid.

The pale even surface on a new jar is that moment, held still.

This balm does not arrive all at once, and that is down to how it was made.

The herbs went into the oil whole and sat there for weeks.

Jar after jar, in the dark, at room temperature.

Then it is strained. What comes out is oil that is holding the herb, not oil with something dropped into it.

Compounds held in a fat leave it slowly. That is the whole reason the warmth here rises instead of hits.

There are three different mints in a jar of Muscle Revive.

Peppermint, spearmint and lemon mint. Related, and they do not smell alike.

They grow in separate beds, because mints cross if you let them.

Three mints, cut separately, dried separately, and steeped into the same oil.

Which is why the cool note in this balm has more than one layer to it.

Can you tell two mints apart by smell?

Biofreeze got its start in Florida. It debuted at the Florida Chiropractic Association back in 1991, and that green gel has been in gym bags ever since.

So we read the label honestly. 4% menthol in a water and alcohol gel, which is why it hits cold fast and dries clean. We also lined it up against Icy Hot and Tiger Balm, because people mix those three up all the time.

Then the other path: a balm built on warmth instead of cold, with ginger, turmeric, and cayenne from our own garden, slow-infused in olive and coconut oil and blended with beeswax.

Open a new jar of Muscle Revive and the first thing you notice is the colour.

Nothing was added to make it gold. That came out of the ground.

Turmeric is a rhizome, and the colour is already inside it. Peel one and your hands know.

Dried, then steeped in oil for weeks. The pigment is fat soluble, so it leaves the root and stays in the oil.

The gold you are looking at in the jar is the root. Still there, just moved.
