Status update on one of our implants for cancer pain last week!

He couldn't eat. Not because of the pancreatic cancer itself—but because the pain was so severe and he couldn't tolerate even low-dose opioids. His pain scores were in the moderate range after admission, but he had minimal quality of life, even on low doses that caused significant fatigue.

He came to us losing weight, suffering daily, and running out of options. We implanted an intrathecal pain pump delivering microscopic doses of medication directly to the spinal cord.

The next day, he was eating.Today, he is pain-free.

Sometimes the biggest victory in cancer care isn't a scan result. It's sitting down and enjoying a meal again.

💬 REAL PATIENT STORY — A DIFFERENT KIND OF RECOVERY

After undergoing a posterior cervical fusion from C3–C7, one of our patients shared something remarkable…

✨ She was pain-free after surgery
✨ She is now off all post-operative pain medications
✨ She did not require a single oral or IV opioid

Her recovery was supported with Journavix (suzetrigine) — a newer, non-opioid medication designed to target pain at its source.

Stories like this highlight what’s possible when we combine advanced surgical care with innovative, evidence-based pain management.

At HOPE Pain Relief, our mission is simple:
➡️ Help patients heal comfortably, safely, and without unnecessary opioids

💬 If you or a loved one are preparing for surgery or struggling with post-operative pain, contact our team today to learn about the latest treatment options available. We are located in Tampa, FL and ready to serve your needs.

🚨 WARNING FOR PATIENTS WITH INTRATHECAL DRUG PUMPS 🚨

As magnetized devices become more common in everyday life, we may be seeing a new and underrecognized safety issue for patients with implanted pain pumps.

Recently, one of our patients experienced recurrent motor stalls in her intrathecal drug pump. After careful investigation, we discovered the cause was a magnetized bracelet she purchased at a county fair that was marketed for arthritis relief.

⚠️ Strong magnets can interfere with intrathecal pump function — similar to the effects seen with MRI magnets or pacemaker magnets. In this case, the magnetic field likely affected the pump motor/gears and triggered intermittent stalls.

Examples of devices/products that may contain strong magnets include:
🔹 Magnetic therapy bracelets or jewelry
🔹 Magnetic phone mounts or cases
🔹 Wireless charging accessories
🔹 Smart watches and wearable tech
🔹 Magnetic clasps in clothing or bags
🔹 High-powered speakers/headphones

This is why we strongly emphasize:
✅ Reviewing pump logs at every follow-up visit
✅ Reporting any pump alarms, unusual symptoms, or withdrawal symptoms immediately
✅ Informing your physician about any new electronic or magnetic devices you begin using

🩺 Vigilance is key. In this case, simply asking the patient about any newly purchased devices helped us identify the problem and prevent further complications.

At HOPE Pain Relief, we specialize in advanced intrathecal drug pump management and complex cancer and chronic pain care.

💬 If you experience unusual pump behavior, alarms, withdrawal symptoms, or have concerns about device interactions, contact our team or speak with your physician immediately.

✨ A NEW OPTION FOR PAIN RELIEF — WITHOUT OPIOIDS ✨

There’s a new medication called **Journavix (suzetrigine)** that may help treat pain after surgery — *without using opioids*.

Why this matters:
🔹 Helps control pain by targeting the nerves that send pain signals
🔹 Does **not** carry the same risks of addiction or breathing problems as opioids
🔹 Designed to support recovery after procedures

For many patients, pain relief has often meant choosing between discomfort and unwanted side effects. Medications like Journavix are changing that — offering a **safer, more targeted approach** to managing pain.

At **HOPE Pain Relief**, we are committed to bringing our patients the most advanced, evidence-based treatments available — so you can heal comfortably and confidently.

💬 **Interested in learning more? Contact our team today** to see if this option is right for you or your upcoming procedure.

Over the past two weeks, I had the opportunity to speak with PM&R residents at the University of South Florida on the role of intrathecal drug delivery in managing spasticity, chronic pain, and cancer-related pain.

We focused on:

Patient selection and indications
Expanding use cases, including oncology pain
Practical considerations for therapy optimization
Real-world applications of Prialt (ziconotide) in appropriate patients

Intrathecal therapy remains one of the most powerful tools we have for targeted, low-dose, high-impact pain control—and an area where many trainees have limited exposure.

Always a privilege to work with the next generation of physicians and help expand access to these advanced therapies.

Part 1 of 3: Pancreatic cancer pain has a pattern—and it can be treated.

Most patients experience:

⭐ Deep abdominal pain radiating to the back
⭐ Nerve-related (sympathetic) pain
⭐ Increasing complexity as disease progresses

But there are advanced options beyond opioids:

Celiac plexus neurolysis (relief lasting months)
Intrathecal drug delivery (sustainable, adjustable pain control)

The key is getting to the right specialist early.

Look for:

⭐ Academic training (e.g., MD Anderson, major cancer centers)
⭐ Experience in oncology pain
⭐ Ability to perform advanced interventions
