If your baby or child has been struggling with issues like reflux, eczema, constipation, food sensitivities, FPIES and youโ€™ve been told itโ€™s normal or to just wait until they outgrow it.. This is the part no one tells you!

Yes, an immature immune system plays a role. But โ€œwait and seeโ€ is not a strategy.

Are you asking yourself these things before considering reintroducing dairy?

Here is what I look at with every family before we even consider reintroducing dairy

First - are symptoms calm and at baseline? No active flares, no gut upset, no mucousy stools. If the gut is already reactive, itโ€™s hard to get a clean read on any reintroduction.

Second - does the family actually want to bring dairy back in? Some families are doing great without it and that is completely valid. The ladder is only worth doing if reintroduction is truly the goal.

Third - what was the original reaction and how severe? That shapes how/where we start.

The milk ladder can be a really powerful tool but the information out thtere is all over the place. It can be scary yet exciting to start with trials.

If you are here right now, my free gut health guide walks through how we think about gut health for sensitive babies and kids!

Iron deficiency is one of the most common and overlooked issues I see in babies - especially those with tummy troubles, eczema, or food sensitivities.

By 6 months, the iron stores passed to your baby during pregnancy start to run low. Breastmilk alone cannot fill that gap.

My favorite iron-rich foods to start with:
๐Ÿฅฉ Beef or lamb - most absorbable form (heme iron)
๐Ÿ— Chicken or turkey thighs - more iron than breast meat
๐ŸŸ Sardines and salmon - iron + omega-3s
๐Ÿซ˜ Lentils or beans - pair with vitamin C to boost absorption
๐Ÿฅš Egg yolk

Pro tip: always pair plant-based iron with a vitamin C food - sweet potato, kiwi, tomato, or bell pepper all work great!

Many sensitive babies tend to have:
Lower Bifidobacterium & Lactobacillus
AND higher levels of more inflammatory gut bacteria

Starting solids may feel scary at this time, but did you know that starting solids (strategically) can actually HELP.

When done intentionally, introducing solids:
Increases microbial diversity
Shifts the gut toward SCFA-producing bacteria
Strengthens the gut barrier
Supports immune development

So what does that look like in real life?
๐Ÿ’š Sweet Potato โ€“ Gentle soluble fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria + supports p**p consistency.
๐Ÿ’š Stewed Apple โ€“ Rich in pectin (a powerful prebiotic!) that helps calm irritation + support smoother motility.
๐Ÿ’š Mashed Lentils โ€“ Iron + plant protein + fiber to encourage microbiome diversity.
๐Ÿ’š Blueberries โ€“ Polyphenol-rich to support SCFA production + reduce inflammation.
๐Ÿ’š Sardines or Salmon โ€“ Omega-3s for brain development + gut inflammation support (bonus: early allergen exposure).
๐Ÿ’š Ground Walnuts โ€“ Finely ground into purรฉes for omega-3s, polyphenols + allergen exposure support.
๐Ÿ’š Oat Bran โ€“ Beta-glucan fiber to improve stool consistency (start small!).

We donโ€™t need ultra-processed rice cerealโ€ฆ
and we donโ€™t need 48-hour ancestral bone broths either.
We need simple, strategic, fiber-rich whole foods that feed the microbiome
