Before we chase hormones, gut protocols, thyroid numbers or the latest supplement… we build the foundation. 🏡🌿

And sometimes that surprises people.

Let’s use BHRT (bio identical hormone replacement therapy) as an example.

I think BHRT can be FANTASTIC. I use it in my practice when it’s appropriate.

But I also meet women who have already had hormone testing—DUTCH, ZRT, serum labs, etc.—were given hormones based on those results…

…and they still don’t feel well.

So they find me.

And instead of immediately changing their hormones, I start asking more questions.

Then we uncover things like:

🩸 Iron deficiency
🌿 Magnesium or other nutrient deficiencies
🦋 Hashimoto’s or thyroid dysfunction
🧬 B-vitamin deficiencies
🍽️ Poor digestion or inadequate digestive enzymes
🥩 Inadequate protein intake
😴 Poor sleep
🧠 Chronic stress
🏋️ Too little movement or muscle
🥦 A diet that simply isn’t giving the body what it needs

And we start there.

Because hormones don’t operate in their own little bubble.

Your body needs raw materials.

It needs nutrients.
It needs protein.
It needs adequate digestion and absorption.
It needs sleep.
It needs movement.
It needs metabolic health.
It needs a nervous system that isn’t constantly being told there is a tiger chasing you. 😂

And something really cool happens when we start rebuilding those things:

People start feeling better.

Do some patients still need BHRT?

Absolutely!

But sometimes they need less. Sometimes the dose doesn’t change at all—but suddenly the therapy actually seems to HELP because we’re supporting the person underneath the prescription.

And this brings me to something incredibly important:

You have to follow up with me. ❤️

I don’t practice one-size-fits-all medicine.

You are uniquely made, and I want to respect that.

I need to know:

How did YOUR body respond?

What improved?

What didn’t?

What did you tolerate?

What made you feel worse?

What changed in your labs?

What don’t you need anymore?

Because your treatment plan shouldn’t be something I hand you once and expect you to follow indefinitely.

It’s something we build together.

And anyone who has worked with me probably knows four things about me:

1. I believe you.

When you tell me something doesn’t feel right, I listen.

2. I DEEPLY care about you.

You’re not a lab report or a diagnosis to me.

3. My goal is to educate you.

I want you to understand your body so that eventually you need me less, not more.

4. I HATE a giant supplement list. 😂

Supplements ROCK.

Twenty supplements indefinitely?

No thank you.

Sometimes we use more therapeutically for a season. Then we reassess, remove what we don’t need, and move forward.

My goal isn’t to create dependence.

My goal is to give you answers, educate you, empower you and support you while your body heals.

And yes, that requires a relationship.

It requires follow-up.

It requires adjusting the plan.

It requires listening.

And sometimes it means I randomly think about you on a Tuesday morning and decide to call you… only to discover you really needed me that day. ❤️

My patients probably aren’t surprised by that anymore.

And there’s another piece of this practice that is incredibly important to me:

I started Living Well Functionally to glorify God through the work He has given me to do.

I pray for my patients.

I think about them when I’m not at work.

I genuinely want them to succeed.

I want to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the way I care for the person sitting across from me.

So yes…

We can work on your gut.

We can investigate your hormones.

We can support your thyroid.

We can dig into autoimmunity.

We can figure out why you’re exhausted.

But I’m still going to ask about your food.

Your protein.

Your bowel movements.

Your sleep.

Your stress.

Your movement.

Your relationships.

Your nutrients.

Your life.

Because I cannot medicate or supplement you out of a foundation that isn’t supporting you.

And I don’t want to try.

If you’re looking for a supplement for every symptom or a cookie-cutter protocol, I may not be the right provider for you.

But if you’re ready to understand your body, build the foundation, ask why, and create a plan that changes as you change?

That’s exactly the kind of medicine I love practicing. 💚

Build the foundation. Support the system. Then personalize the rest.

🌿 Green Medicine vs. Functional Medicine — they’re NOT the same thing.

I get questions like this all the time:

“Cassie, what can my husband take to increase his testosterone?”

And my brain immediately goes…

🤔 How old is he?
🏋️ What is his activity level?
⚖️ Is he carrying excess body fat?
🥩 Is he getting the nutrients and building blocks needed to MAKE testosterone?
😴 How is he sleeping?
🧠 What is his stress level?
🦠 How is his digestion and absorption?
🩸 What do the rest of his labs look like?
❓ And most importantly—what symptoms is he actually experiencing?

Because recommending a supplement simply because someone has a symptom or an abnormal lab isn’t necessarily functional medicine.

Sometimes it’s just green medicine.

🌿 Green medicine:
“You have X problem, so take Y natural product.”

💊 Conventional medicine: pill for the ill.

🌿 Green medicine: natural pill for the ill.

Different tool. Same thought process.

And listen—I LOVE supplements. I use them every day in my practice.

But the supplement isn’t the philosophy.

Functional medicine asks:

WHY is this happening?

If testosterone is low, I don’t just want to know what supplement might raise testosterone.

I want to know why his body isn’t making enough in the first place.

Maybe we need to work on sleep.

Maybe it’s insulin resistance.

Maybe it’s chronic stress.

Maybe he needs to build muscle.

Maybe he’s deficient in nutrients required for hormone production.

Maybe there’s another medical or hormonal issue that needs investigated.

Maybe several of those things are happening at the same time.

THAT is functional medicine.

We’re not replacing the pharmacy with a supplement cabinet.

We’re trying to understand the system.

And this is something I feel very strongly about:

My goal is NOT to put someone on 50 supplements and keep them there for the rest of their life.

I actually loathe that approach. 😂

There are absolutely foundational nutrients and supports that many people benefit from, and there are times when therapeutic supplementation is incredibly useful.

But whenever possible, I even like to pulse those supports as the body changes.

Support what needs supported.

Correct what can be corrected.

Build the foundation.

Reassess.

And eventually ask:

“What don’t we need anymore?”

Because successful functional medicine shouldn’t necessarily result in a bigger supplement organizer.

Sometimes success looks like a smaller one. 💚

That’s the difference between simply treating the marker…

…and asking what made the marker abnormal in the first place.

Want to know what insulin resistance ACTUALLY means? 👀

I found the coolest little biochemistry video showing what insulin does at the cellular level—and I realize that sounds incredibly nerdy. 😂

But stay with me, because once you SEE this, insulin resistance makes so much more sense.

Think of your cells like a house.

🍞 You eat carbohydrates.

⬆️ Your blood glucose rises.

📣 Your pancreas releases insulin.

Now insulin shows up at the cell and essentially says:

“Hey! We have glucose out here that needs somewhere to go!”

Insulin binds to its insulin receptor on the outside of the cell.

And then something really cool happens.

It starts a little molecular game of telephone inside the cell:

INSULIN → INSULIN RECEPTOR → IRS → PI3K → AKT

AKT then sends the message:

🚪 “GET THE GLUCOSE DOORS!”

Those doors are called GLUT4 transporters.

GLUT4 normally hangs out inside muscle and fat cells. When insulin signaling works properly, GLUT4 moves to the cell membrane and creates a pathway for glucose to enter the cell.

Glucose comes in → your cells can use or store that energy → blood glucose comes back down.

Beautiful system. 🙌

But what happens with insulin resistance?

Imagine insulin knocking on the door…

…and the cell isn’t answering very well.

KNOCK KNOCK.

“GLUCOSE DELIVERY!”

Nothing.

So your pancreas says:

“Apparently they didn’t hear us. SEND MORE INSULIN.” 😂

Now insulin levels climb higher to accomplish the same job.

For a while, this can actually work.

Your blood sugar may still look perfectly “normal” because your pancreas is pumping out more and more insulin to KEEP it normal.

And THIS is one reason I care about fasting insulin—not just glucose and A1C.

Eventually, though, that compensation can start struggling.

Now glucose begins rising too.

And here’s where weight becomes part of the conversation.

Insulin isn’t just involved in blood sugar.

It is also a fuel-storage signal.

When insulin is elevated, your body gets the message that energy is available and should be stored. Insulin also suppresses the breakdown of stored fat.

So if insulin is chronically elevated, your metabolic environment may make accessing stored body fat more difficult.

That doesn’t mean:

❌ “Insulin makes weight loss impossible.”

And it definitely doesn’t mean:

❌ “Just stop eating carbs.”

It means we need to ask:

WHY does your body need so much insulin in the first place?

Maybe we need to look at:

🥩 Protein and meal composition
🥦 Fiber and whole-food carbohydrates
🚶‍♀️ Movement—especially after meals
🏋️ Building muscle
😴 Sleep
🧠 Chronic stress
🔥 Inflammation
🩸 Glucose AND insulin patterns

Because sometimes the person who tells me,

“I swear I’m doing everything right and my body will NOT let go of this weight,”

doesn’t need another lecture about willpower.

They need someone to look at their metabolism.

And THIS is why I love functional medicine.

We don’t just ask:

“What’s your blood sugar?”

We ask:

“How hard is your body working to KEEP that blood sugar there?”

Those are two very different questions. 💚

Can I tell you one of the things I think gets overlooked the most in healthcare?

Blood sugar.

And I’m not just talking about diabetes.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that if your fasting glucose is “normal,” then your blood sugar must be healthy. The reality is your body is incredibly good at keeping blood sugar in a normal range…until it can’t anymore. Sometimes it spends years compensating before anything looks abnormal on routine lab work.

This is why I dig so deeply into blood sugar and metabolism with my patients.

When blood sugar isn’t well regulated, it doesn’t just affect your pancreas. It can affect almost every system in your body.

Feeling exhausted even after sleeping?

Struggling with brain fog or difficulty concentrating?

Waking up in the middle of the night?

Craving sugar or carbs every afternoon?

Having trouble losing weight despite doing “all the right things?”

Noticing changes in your cholesterol?

Dealing with erectile dysfunction or a lower s*x drive?

Feeling like stress is running your life?

These can all be pieces of the same puzzle.

Blood sugar dysfunction can contribute to inflammation, oxidative stress, damage to the lining of your blood vessels, hormone imbalances, changes in cholesterol patterns, and even changes in how your brain functions. Stress makes blood sugar worse…and unstable blood sugar makes it harder for your body to handle stress. It becomes a vicious cycle.

That’s why I don’t stop at looking at one glucose number.

I look at fasting insulin, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, inflammatory markers, liver enzymes, body composition, symptoms, and often use a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) to see what’s actually happening throughout the day. Some of the biggest “aha!” moments my patients have come from wearing a CGM for just a couple of weeks.

The exciting part?

Blood sugar dysfunction is often one of the most responsive things we can improve. Better food choices, more muscle, walking after meals, improving sleep, reducing stress, and eating enough protein can have profound effects on your metabolism.

Your body is always giving you clues. My job is to help put the puzzle pieces together before they become a diagnosis.

“Your labs are normal.”

For so many people, those words do not feel reassuring.
They feel defeating.

I have now had multiple patients come into their bloodwork review almost bracing themselves for me to say:
“Everything looks fine.”

Meanwhile, they are exhausted.
Foggy.
Anxious.
Inflamed.
Struggling to sleep.
Losing hair.
Battling bloating, dizziness, headaches, weight changes, or just feeling like they are slowly losing themselves.

And then something beautiful happens during these visits…

They realize their body HAS been communicating all along. ❤️

When we look at bloodwork through a more expanded and functional lens, patterns begin to appear:
• nutrient depletion
• inflammation
• blood sugar instability
• stress physiology changes
• poor recovery
• immune dysregulation
• digestive dysfunction
• hormone imbalances

Maybe the labs are still technically “within range”…
…but that does not automatically mean the body is thriving.

One of the most emotional things I hear in practice is:
“So I’m NOT crazy?”

No.
You are not crazy.
Your symptoms are not “just in your head.”
Your body has been asking for support.

My goal is not to create fear around bloodwork.
It is the opposite.

I want patients to feel EMPOWERED.
To understand their bodies.
To learn why they feel the way they do.
To realize healing is often possible when we stop dismissing the whispers before they become screams.

If I accomplish nothing else as a provider, I hope my patients leave feeling:
✨ seen
✨ believed
✨ educated
✨ hopeful

Because sometimes validation itself is healing. 💛

Most people think their magnesium is “normal”…
because their labs say so.

But here’s the problem 👇

🧪 The standard magnesium test (serum magnesium) only looks at about 1% of your body’s magnesium.

That’s the magnesium floating in your blood.

👉 The other 99%? It lives inside your cells.

And that’s where magnesium actually does its job:
✔ calming your nervous system
✔ helping you sleep
✔ relaxing muscles
✔ supporting energy production
✔ stabilizing blood sugar

🤯 So what happens?

Your body works HARD to keep blood magnesium normal (because your heart depends on it ❤️)

So even when you’re depleted…
👉 your serum magnesium can still look “fine”

🧬 That’s where RBC magnesium comes in

This test looks at magnesium inside your red blood cells
➡️ giving a better picture of what your body actually has available

🚩 Why I see low RBC magnesium ALL the time:

* Chronic stress (huge one)
* Poor sleep
* Gut issues (absorption problems)
* High sugar / processed foods
* Medications (like PPIs or diuretics)

💊 And not all magnesium is the same…

Different forms do different things:

✨ Glycinate → calm, sleep, anxiety
💩 Citrate → constipation support
⚡ Malate → energy & fatigue
🧠 Threonate → brain & memory
❤️ Taurate → heart & blood pressure

🧭 Bottom line:

✔ A “normal” magnesium level doesn’t always mean optimal
✔ Where we measure magnesium matters
✔ The form you take matters just as much

If you’ve ever been told your labs are “normal” but you still feel:
😴 exhausted
😵‍💫 anxious
💪 crampy
😩 not quite right…

Magnesium might be part of the story.

If you want to dig deeper into your labs or symptoms, I’m always here to help 💛
