🔙Throwback Thursday! 10 years ago, Disney started paying me to make educational content. This video was a part of a series where I disassembled every day electronics and explained in detail how the circuits work. Here in this video, I go into the operation of a clever joule thief circuit before tying that into the entire bug zapper circuit.

A joule thief circuit is a classic circuit that demonstrates inductive kickback, pulsed DC transformer action, and switching converters in a very minimal package.

Throwback Tuesday! This was exactly 7 years ago when I designed and manufactured an automated license plate spinner.
I designed and made this for Canon Inc. Canon manufactures a large majority of the Florida toll cameras with license plate recognition technology. I made about 10 of these machines so Canon could demonstrate their technology with my license plate spinner. They showed how fast their cameras and software could pick up different plates. They could read them even at the full speed of my machine! The machine I made uses two brushless motor with rotary encoders for angularly positioning the motors. I used an ODrive motor controller to sync the two motors together and I wrote the firmware for the ESP32 microcontroller to have different modes of operation. Canon wanted the ability to easily change the speed and also toggle the motion profile from an indexed movement to a continuous rotation. This video is from the early prototype phase of a vertical license plate spinner but I also designed and manufactured a horizontal spinner for Canon as well.
