Myth 2: Arthritis only affects the limbs.

Fact: Degenerative joint disease can affect any joint in the body, including the spine, jaw, and even the small joints of the toes. When arthritis develops in the spine, it can lead to stiffness, reduced flexibility, and altered nerve signals that influence movement and posture. Dogs may arch their back, move more cautiously, or avoid certain activities - behaviours that caregivers often mistake for aging, laziness, or even training problems.

Similarly, arthritis in the jaw or toes can subtly change how a dog eats, chews, or bears weight, leading to less obvious but still significant discomfort.
Recognising that arthritis extends beyond the limbs helps ensure pain in these less visible areas isn’t overlooked.
