Teach Thursday | Choosing the Right Magnesium
Did you know that not all magnesium supplements are the same?
Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical processes in the body, including muscle function, nerve signaling, blood sugar regulation, sleep, heart health, and energy production. Different forms of magnesium are absorbed differently and may be better suited for specific health goals.
Here's a quick guide:
💤 Magnesium Glycinate
One of the best-absorbed forms. Often recommended for relaxation, sleep, stress management, and muscle recovery.
🧠 Magnesium L-Threonate
Known for its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and may support memory, focus, and cognitive health.
💪 Magnesium Malate
Often chosen for muscle soreness, fatigue, and supporting energy production.
🚽 Magnesium Citrate
Well absorbed and commonly used to help relieve occasional constipation.
❤️ Magnesium Taurate
May support cardiovascular health and healthy blood pressure in some individuals.
🧴 Magnesium Chloride
Commonly found in topical sprays, lotions, and bath products to soothe tired muscles.
🛁 Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt)
Frequently used in baths to help relax sore muscles after exercise.
⚠️ Magnesium Oxide & Magnesium Lactate
These forms are less readily absorbed than some other types but may be used for specific digestive concerns, such as occasional heartburn or constipation, depending on your healthcare provider's recommendation.
🌿 Food First, Supplements Second
The best source of magnesium is still a balanced diet rich in:
🥬 Leafy greens
🥜 Nuts and seeds
🫘 Beans and legumes
🥑 Avocados
🌾 Whole grains
🍫 Dark chocolate (in moderation)
Supplements can be helpful when dietary intake isn't enough or when recommended by your healthcare provider, but they should complement, not replace, a nutrient-rich diet.
