This summer, our beloved Hanoverian, Danka, suffered a gruesome and devastating injury.
Full transparency: seeing her gaping wound and her sadness drained my heart more than I could stand. Each visit took another piece. The pain, the mobility loss, the unhappiness in her eyes. I would leave tear-struck for days, in a state of stress and chaos that took me days to come down from.
Healing was painfully slow. Months passed and I began to lose hope. An otherwise beautiful, healthy horse. Was this how she was going to spend the rest of her life now? Eventually I said it out loud. We would probably never ride again.
If you saw less of me this summer, I wasn’t trying to be absent. I needed space to heal, so I put that energy into growing my business. And somewhere in there, I remembered something.
My horse wasn’t giving up.
For anyone who knows warmbloods, you know that isn’t always the case. She was strong and stoic. Calm and patient. She was modeling exactly what I needed more of, because I was struggling with every one of those things.
She reminded me of what I tell clients all the time. The road to where you want to be is filled with bumps and hurdles, and it is so tempting to quit somewhere in the middle. But the lesson lives in the power of our minds. Believe the outcome you want will happen. Be strong, patient, stoic, and calm. And don’t give up.
Her recovery still has a ways to go. But there was no quitting. Just a few days ago, we rode together for the first time in many months.
One small step forward. One day at a time. Just like the journey I take my clients on.
I love you, sweet Danka girl. 🥰 Thank you for making me stronger, kinder, more patient, and more calm.
It takes a lot to share something this vulnerable, so I’m turning it into a challenge. Tell me in the comments: which one do you need more of right now? Calm, patience, strength, or perseverance?
If you want to see more of Danka and our journey together, help me get at least 50 comments on this post. Danka thanks you! 💛
