Flower of Life Retreats founder, Kristina Rhoades, was interviewed for Do The Next Good Thing! What an amazing movement - check out their mission!
"A dream is what convinced me I needed to make a drastic change and do something different. Literally a dream."
There are inspiring people. And then there are people like Kristina.
In a wheelchair since she was 10-months old, it takes just 5 minutes for you to understand it certainly is not something that defines her. Never has, never will.
Her and her husband Jacob- they first met when they were ten years old- had a good life in Georgia, good jobs- the "American Dream"- when Kristina woke up one day with a vivid understanding of what she was going to do with her life.
"I was looking at my boss one day and just knew that was where I didn't want to end up." she says. "Jacob and I decided why don't we build a place where people can come and be empowered, inspired and find out that there are other ways to be well. You don't need to be defined by anything."
The comment comes on the heals of another that struck a chord.
"It's hard to have a diagnosis like this- where the doctors know what it is- and the solution is to just hand you pills."
And so her dream? To move out west and start a retreat that focuses on people with disabilities. They moved to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico to set out and chase that goal. And now it's becoming a reality with Flower of Life Retreat.
"It's come together really fast and the response from people wanting to help is incredible," she said. "We have 15 healers so far that are willing to give their time to everything you can imagine."
Kristina focuses on mediation for her practice, particularly warding off anxiety, which I often contemplate. I make a mental note to ask her a few more things after this is published. She's built a solid community in Truth or Consequences. Their first retreat is taking place this October with 15 women flying in from around the country to take part. All of them are in wheelchairs.
She talks with pride at the beginnings of an achieved dream. There is no doubt in her mind it will work. There is no doubt that what she's doing is needed this world. And there's no doubt in my mind she will succeed.
As I start talking to her about Do The Next Good Thing I can't help but feel like I'm talking to an angel. Someone who was dealt a bad hand, completely out of her control, and turned it into an experience that will help everyone she ever comes in contact with. I'm blown away.
When I hand her the $100, she smiles gently. Talks a little more about her relationship with Jacob, and bids me adieu with a hug and an understanding that we are all surrounded by incredible people. This is just Wednesday's reminder.
