Strep Throat in Kids:

I’ve been seeing a lot of strep throat lately so here’s a quick, guide to help you know what to look for 👇

Common signs of strep throat
• Sudden sore throat (often without a runny nose or cough) but NOT always
• Pain with swallowing
• Fever
• Red, swollen tonsils
• Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth
• Headache, stomachache, or even vomiting (especially in younger kids)

Strep is treated with antibiotics to:
✔ Shorten symptoms
✔ Prevent spread to others
✔ Prevent rare complications like rheumatic fever

Good news:
After 24 hours on antibiotics, your child is usually no longer contagious and can return to school if fever-free.
If you’re unsure, don’t guess—get them checked 💛

As a pediatric APRN, I love reminding parents that simple, everyday play is actually evidence-based and critical for your child’s development. You don’t need fancy toys—just a little time and intention!
Here are a few research-backed ways to play with your toddler:
✨ Follow their lead
Let your child choose the activity and join in. This builds confidence, independence, and connection.
🗣️ Narrate everything
Talk about what they’re doing (“You’re stacking the blue block!”). This supports language development and early communication skills.
📚 Read together daily
Even short, simple books help build vocabulary and attention. Let them turn pages and point to pictures!
🎭 Pretend play matters
Play kitchen, dolls, or even “feeding” stuffed animals helps develop social and emotional skills.
🧩 Encourage problem-solving
Simple puzzles, stacking, or shape sorters build early cognitive skills—give them time to try before stepping in.
🎶 Add music and movement
Songs, dancing, and clapping games improve coordination and memory (and they’re so fun!).
❤️ Keep it simple & consistent
Just 10–15 minutes of focused, distraction-free play each day can make a big impact.
You are your child’s most important teacher—and the best part is, they think you’re just playing 😊

How much water should your children have?

Babies (around 6 months)
Small amounts of water can be introduced. They only need 4–8 ounces per day until age 1 because breastmilk or formula provides most fluids.
Toddlers (1–3 years):
Need about 4 cups of fluids per day, including water or milk.
Young children (4–8 years):
Need about 5 cups per day.
Older children:
Need about 7–8 cups per day.
Sugary Drinks — Best to Avoid
No sugary drinks for children under 2 years old.
Limit sugary drinks for older kids as much as possible.
This includes soda, juice drinks, sports drinks, lemonade, and sweetened water.
Why limit sugary drinks?
They reduce kids’ interest in drinking plain water
Add extra calories with little nutrition
Can reduce appetite for healthy foods
Increase the risk of weight gain, cavities, diabetes, and other health problems
Bottom line:
Water and milk are the best choices for kids.

Lots of flu questions today due to a spike in Flu A!
My top advice: REST, gargle warm salt water if old enough ( sore throat seems to be big this year with the flu) if over a year old a teaspoon of honey truly does wonders for cough. Fluids fluids fluids! For children old enough and adults I like Oscillococcinum Homeopathic Medicine!
Feel better friends!

We have seen an increase in flu A but there are also still other URI’s going around!

Making books a part of your child's bedtime routine:
Set aside 10 to 20 minutes with the TV off for sharing books as part of your regular bedtime routine. Regular bedtime routines started when children are young will help prevent future bedtime struggles. Teaching your children how to fall asleep alone by putting them in bed awake helps prevent future night wakings.

Your 2-year-old child can…

Choose a book to share.

Enjoy sharing the same book over and over and over again!

Repeat some of the words and phrases you say or read.

Ask you questions, such as: "What's that?"

Let me know your child’s favorite book in the comments 💗
