The Heart Rhythm Twins Study is a novel research study enrolling identical and same-sex fraternal twins to investigate the genetic basis of common types of abnormal heart rhythms. These beats, known as premature atrial contractions (PACs) and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), occur in the majority of people, but the frequency varies and may be important to overall health. Very little is known about why some people have more while others have less. We now have approval to conduct this study with twins to see if indeed the frequency of these early beats may be heritable.
The study is fully remote so participants can enroll from anywhere and will be mailed all study materials. Participation involves wearing a small, adhesive heart rhythm monitor (or EKG), for 2 weeks, and answering 10-15 minutes of questionnaires with a member of the study team. The EKG monitor will track heart rhythms throughout normal daily activities, and a report of those heart rhythms can be shared with you upon completion of the study.
Optionally, participants can provide a saliva sample for DNA analysis, as well as a 12-lead EKG and photo though these activities are not required.
