KPC provides information, education, and treatment services to addicted persons and their families. The treatment team at KPC developed and pioneered the concept of Intensive Outpatient Rehabilitation as an alternative to traditional inpatient treatment and we remain on the forefront of the addictions network on Long Island.

The fundamental principle underlying our therapeutic efforts is the concern for the individual's recovery from chemical dependency which involves sobriety, the psychological and spiritual growth of the individual as a whole, and the healing of the intra-family conflict.

The strength of our program lies in the excellence and integrity of the staff, the dedication to effective treatment which combines individualized counseling and psychological treatment with the group process of recovery, and the willingness to deliver what we set forth as our treatment policies and capabilities. Our strength is also in our flexibility to offer each client individualized treatment within a structured setting.

The staff of KPC is well known in the treatment community for providing the highest-quality patient care in a healthy and affirming environment.

Because of escalating health care expenses and the ensuing cost-containment measures that have been instituted by health care underwriters, the challenge has been to provide more refined diagnostic and assessment procedures to ensure that the client's needs will be adequately addressed in a flexible and innovative manner without significant compromise of client care.

We have devoted years of effort to this assessment and diagnostic process to ensure that the proper facility is chosen to ensure safety and appropriate care and that the level of care will be suitable to meet the needs of the client and their family.

KPC offers two premier outpatient treatment centers that combine the qualities of effective care, trust, dignity and respect. The client always comes first.

We thank you for the time you spend here. If there is any way we can be of service to you, please do not hesitate to contact us.

On this night... 25 years ago, 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift of saving lives. None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight, before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.

May We Never Forget 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Having worked in behavioral health for more than forty years, I have witnessed extraordinary changes in our profession.

In the 1980s, many of the people entering the addiction-treatment field were themselves in recovery. They understood the disease personally, and they brought passion, humility, and a deep commitment to helping others find sobriety.

For them, this work was more than a career—it was a mission.

As the treatment system expanded, facilities opened, facilities closed, and addiction treatment became an industry. Somewhere along the way, I fear we began losing some of the heart and spirit that once defined our profession. That saddens me beyond words.

There is an old saying: “You can’t teach what you don’t know, and you can’t lead where you won’t go.”

Today, young professionals may enter the field well educated in the DSM-5 and fully capable of assigning a diagnosis—but many do not know what the Big Book is or understand the recovery community, or recognize the importance of lived experience. They may know the diagnostic criteria, but do they truly see the person behind the diagnosis?

Medication and evidence-based clinical care are essential. But medication alone cannot restore meaning, repair relationships, rebuild trust, or help someone discover a life worth living.

We cannot simply treat the symptoms and leave the human spirit to figure out the rest on its own.

Addiction and mental health treatment must address the whole person—their body, mind, relationships, purpose, dignity, and spirit.

This work should never become “just a job.” We are entrusted with people’s lives and with families who are desperate for hope. Technical knowledge matters, but so do compassion, connection, authenticity, and the ability to meet another human being exactly where they are.

We must bring the heart back into behavioral healthcare.

Hurting people need more than a diagnosis, a prescription, and an appointment on a schedule. They need to be seen, heard, understood, and treated with dignity. They need someone willing to sit with their pain, recognize the person behind the symptoms, and help them believe that recovery is possible—even when they cannot yet believe it for themselves.

I am enormously proud to say that this is the care we provide at the Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery. Every person who works at KPC cares deeply about every patient who walks through our doors. We see the individual—not simply the diagnosis—and we remain invested in that person’s recovery, family, dignity, and future.

At times, I feel as though we are the last of a breed long gone. But perhaps we are not the last. Perhaps it is our responsibility to preserve what made this profession so meaningful in the first place—and to teach the next generation that knowledge may make someone a clinician, but compassion, connection, and commitment are what make someone a healer.

The following was issued by OASAS Rob Kent August 2017. It still applies today.

Re: Letter from Counsel regarding unauthorized services and practitioners

To Whom it May Concern:
When OASAS was created the NYS Legislature sought to ensure consistent quality of services and protection from unregulated persons or entitles holding themselves out as offering specialized expertise or services to vulnerable persons and families. The current opioid crisis throughout the country has created opportunities for persons in recovery and others seeking professional status by which to be of service.

Unfortunately, it has also given rise to many who seek to exploit the pain and fear at the root of addiction by falsely representing their credentials, expertise, background, and connections with treatment programs, some also fraudulent, to further their own financial gain.

Section 32.05 of the mental hygiene law provides that no substance use disorder services may be established without the approval of the Commissioner. This means provision of addiction services, as defined by the Office, must also be approved by the Office. OASAS authority includes monitoring for these unauthorized services or unauthorized practitioners and taking actions to stop them and prevent them from harming potential patients and their families.

Authorized practitioners who are licensed in New York, credentialed or authorized by OASAS must uphold standards of conduct that include prohibitions against false representations of expertise, promoting personal gain or profit over the public good, and non-exploitation of service recipients in all phases of delivery of addiction services: prior to admission, during treatment and after discharge.

OASAS intends to use its statutory authority to regulate such services to identify and, wherever possible, bring unauthorized practitioners and services into compliance with state regulations.

Any information about unauthorized practitioners or services may be forwarded to OASAS counsel at: [email protected]
