Accepting applications for the 2026 Montana Wool Harvesting School. The school will be based in Billings area from October 15 through October 18 with Wade Kopren as the lead instructor.

The school will start at 1pm on Thursday, October 15th at the Center of the Nation Wool Warehouse where manager Scott Lammers and other instructors will cover wool quality and marketing, animal welfare and business management. From the morning of the 16th through lunch on the 18th, we be shearing at the Hollenbeck Ranch southwest of Molt.

The cost of the school for first-time attendees is $300 with checks made payable to the Montana Wool Lab. 4-H and FFA members receive special discounts depending on the number of open slots with the minimum age requirement being 16.

What a great show day yesterday, everyone did well. Caitlyn won Supreme Showman her showmanship just keeps improving. This is the 3rd year she has won it! Roscoe, her lamb earned a second blue in his class. Patrick and Jumpy place Second in their Market and Showmanship classes. Abby and Mickey placed first in their showmanship class and second in her Market class.

Tonight is the Market Animal Sale registration starts at 5pm in the Multi- purpose building with the sale starting at 6:30pm.

Both Caitlyn and Abby will have baskets in the sale. All three lambs will sell tonight. We hope to see you there!

I have been spinning some merino neck skirtings that had some vm and bits of hay that I saved off my fleeces. I started by washing it, making sure I got all the grease out before the next step and keeping the lock structure. Next I combed it on my extra fine three row combs, keeping the lock structure during washing makes combing a lot easier. Another important thing is to not overload your combs. I struggled with this for a long time, but it makes a huge difference in the amount of waste and ease of combing. I also used Silk Milk to reduce the static ( which can make combing miserable ).
After that I spun it. I have spun quite a bit of medium wool and I have been getting used to Merino. It is different as it likes to be fine and needs to be handled gently compared to medium wool. Lastly I chose to chain ply it into dk/ sport weight yarn for crocheting.

Cheviot fleeces-
Sold-Baby Wombat
Will wash up nice and white, lots of VM and some second cuts. Got in to some seeds in fall. Baby Wombat is a ram, but it doesn’t seem to have a strong ram smell.
$2.00/ lb. Total fleece weight is 3.65 lbs heavily skirted. -sold

SOLD-Baby Roo
Probably one of the longest fleeces this year, she didn’t raise any lambs so just some VM, She did get into some seeds in fall, and she fought during shearing so there are some bigger pieces of hay that can get picked out.
$4.00/ lb Total fleece weight is 5.97 lbs, heavily skirted. -SOLD

Sold-Misty
Raised twins this spring and they loved to jump on her back and cuddle. She got into some seeds last fall, and has lots of VM from the lamb love ❤️.
$2/lb Total fleece weight is 3.01 lbs heavily skirted. -Sold

She raised twin lambs this spring, so there is some VM. She is 1/2 Suffolk.
$3/ lb Total fleece weight is 4.49 lbs heavily skirted. -SOLD

Zadie-SOLD
Winnie’s full sister, she raised a lamb this spring and wore a coat for most of the winter.
There is still VM because the coat came off before the lamb was born.
