Preparing for a More Organized Clean-Up 🧹

As we get closer to our upcoming coastal clean-up, our team has started completing and distributing the necessary forms that will be used by our partners and volunteers.

These preparations may happen behind the scenes, but they help ensure that everyone is properly coordinated and ready for the day ahead. Step by step, we’re putting everything in place for a safe, organized, and meaningful clean-up.

🌊 Building Connections for Marine Conservation, Research & Stronger MPAs

Our visit and conversations with the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at the University of San Diego, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and NOAA provided valuable opportunities to learn, exchange ideas, and explore resources that could help strengthen marine conservation efforts in Calatagan, Batangas.

As we continue supporting the
restoration and long-term stewardship of Calatagan’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), one of our priorities is to encourage a more systematic approach to monitoring, marine research, data collection, ecosystem assessment, and benchmarking.

Protecting an MPA goes beyond establishing boundaries. We need to understand what is happening beneath the surface, document the health of marine ecosystems, establish baseline information, and measure ecological changes over time.

These connections provide important exposure to scientific knowledge, research practices, and potential resources related to marine biodiversity, coastal ecosystems, MPA monitoring, conservation research, and community-based stewardship.

For St. Michael, this journey is about learning from institutions and organizations with extensive experience in marine science and conservation—and exploring how these lessons and potential collaborations can be adapted to the realities of Calatagan and its coastal communities.

Our goal is to help build stronger connections among science, conservation, education, fisherfolk communities, local leadership, and ecotourism so that our MPAs can become better understood, systematically monitored, and more effectively protected.

Every conversation opens another door. Every connection expands what may be possible.

🌿 From Calatagan to the global marine science community, we are building bridges for healthier seas, stronger MPAs, and more resilient coastal communities.

Checking In, Preparing Ahead 🌊

Today, our team conducted an ocular visit to Calumbuyan to assess the current conditions and check the status of the area as we continue preparing for our upcoming coastal clean-up.

A special thank you to Calumbuyan Elementary School for warmly accommodating our team and allowing us to use the school as our headquarters for the clean-up. Your support provides an important space for our team and volunteers as we work together for the community and our coastal environment.

We look forward to a meaningful and well-coordinated clean-up with everyone’s continued support!

And the work continues! 🤿

Following our meetings yesterday, our team continued building partnerships and preparing for our upcoming coastal clean-up and Marine Biodiversity initiatives.

A special thank you to Brgy. Talisay and Brgy. Balibago for making time to listen to our agendas and for sharing your openness and support. Your cooperation and commitment are a huge help as we bring these plans closer to action.

We also extend our appreciation to Brgy. Sta. Ana for helping us coordinate the preparations for the upcoming clean-up in your community.

Every conversation, coordination, and partnership brings us one step closer to creating meaningful impact for our coastal communities and marine ecosystems.

Tuesday, Making Waves! 🌊

Our team spent the day connecting with key partners from the Tourism Office, MENRO, Brgy. Tanagan, and MDRRMO as we continued preparations for our upcoming coastal clean-up and discussed the next steps for St. Michael’s marine biodiversity projects and future initiatives.

Each meeting gave us an opportunity to align our plans, listen to the insights of our local partners, and strengthen the coordination needed to make our upcoming activities safe, organized, and impactful.

Beyond the clean-up, these conversations are also part of a bigger vision—to develop meaningful marine and biodiversity initiatives that bring together communities, students, local organizations, and environmental partners in protecting our coastal ecosystems.

We value every conversation, every connection, and every partnership that helps turn these plans into meaningful action. One meeting at a time, we continue building a stronger foundation for the work ahead.

🌊 MORE CONNECTIONS. MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR M.A.R.I.N.E. ECOTOURISM. 🌿 - We continue to build connections and introduce M.A.R.I.N.E. Ecotourism and Calatagan, Philippines to new audiences.

We recently had the opportunity to connect with Lynnhaven Dive Center & Swim, Princess Anne Distributing Company, and Great Outdoor Provision Co., sharing St. Michael’s vision for immersive marine and nature-based experiences in the Philippines.

From diving and marine expeditions to fishing, outdoor adventure, conservation, and community-based ecotourism, these conversations are helping us expand our network and introduce Calatagan to travelers and outdoor enthusiasts looking for experiences with greater purpose.

Every connection creates another opportunity to tell Calatagan’s story—its Marine Protected Areas, incredible biodiversity, fishing communities, mangroves, reefs, and its connection to the Verde Island Passage.

We are excited to keep building bridges between the Philippines and the outdoor, diving, and adventure communities as we grow M.A.R.I.N.E. Ecotourism internationally. 🇵🇭🇺🇸🌊

POSITIONING ST. MICHAEL FOR INTERNATIONAL TOURISM - St. Michael had a very informative and productive meeting with Ms. Maria Corazon Jorda Apo, Director of the Philippine Department of Tourism of New York, and Ms. Pinky Custodio, Director of Marketing.

Our conversation explored the benefits of DOT accreditation and how it can strengthen St. Michael’s credibility, expand promotional exposure, and help us strategically reach the international tourism market.

We also brainstormed ways to position St. Michael and Calatagan through regional tourism networks, international outreach, and greater promotional opportunities. We are especially grateful for their guidance and for directing us to valuable resources and contacts that can help move these efforts forward.

One of the most encouraging moments was hearing their positive feedback on how St. Michael is carving a distinctive niche in ecotourism and nature-based tourism. Their affirmation that we are on the right track, particularly in developing experiences that appeal to international travelers, reinforces the direction we have been building.

The meeting also provided valuable insights into best practices for promoting tourism internationally while showcasing what makes Calatagan special—its coastlines, marine protected areas, mangroves, fishing communities, local culture, and people.

As St. Michael continues to grow, our vision is not simply to bring more visitors to Calatagan, but to create meaningful travel experiences that connect tourism, conservation, wellness, culture, and community livelihood.
We are grateful for the encouragement, guidance, and opportunities ahead as we work to introduce St. Michael and Calatagan to a wider international audience.

FROM CALATAGAN TO CHESAPEAKE BAY: BUILDING NEW CONNECTIONS- Another exciting day of building connections for future marine adventures!

We had the pleasure of meeting Bob Minnick and discussed opportunities for future diving trips and collaboration with Chesapeake Bay Diving—with hopes of introducing more divers to the incredible waters and marine biodiversity of Calatagan, Batangas, Philippines. 🤿🇵🇭

We also visited Long Bay Pointe Bait & Tackle and connected with local anglers . We also promoted it to fishing enthusiasts.

We were excited by their enthusiasm for the trip and their interest in helping spread the word throughout the Hampton Roads angling community. 🎣

From Chesapeake Bay to Calatagan, we are building connections through diving, fishing, conservation, ecotourism, and adventure—and inviting anglers and outdoor enthusiasts to discover a different side of the Philippines.
