🏸 You can love your sport and still be struggling.

We work with many athletes who are afraid that admitting they’re having a hard time means they aren’t grateful, committed, or passionate enough.

But loving your sport and struggling with food, body image, exercise, or performance pressures are not mutually exclusive.

You can love running…

and still dread rest days.

You can love soccer…

and still feel guilty after eating.

You can love lifting…

and still wonder if you’re doing enough.

Struggling doesn’t mean you’re weak.
And it doesn’t mean you love your sport any less.

You don’t have to hate your sport to seek help.

Somewhere along the line, you started to believe that food has to be earned.

That you need to run enough, burn enough calories, or earn rest before allowing yourself to eat.

The truth is that performance nutrition doesn't work that way.

Your body needs fuel on hard days.
Your body needs fuel on easy days.
Your body needs fuel on rest days.

If thoughts like…

➡️ "I didn't work out, so I should eat less."

➡️ "I have to earn dessert."

➡️ "I need to burn this off."

…sound familiar, you may have unintentionally internalized these common diet culture messages.

These food rules are common among runners, endurance athletes, and active people struggling with disordered eating or an unhealthy relationship with exercise.

This is your reminder that you never have to earn your food. Simply existing is a valid enough reason for you to eat.

🔥 Strong athletes fuel properly.

Discipline in sport isn’t about eating less.
It’s about supporting your body.

Restriction leads to:
→ fatigue
→ injury
→ burnout

Fueling leads to:
→ performance
→ strength
→ recovery

You don’t have to choose between recovery and performance.

Many athletes think underfueling has to look extreme.

The reality is that low energy availability can develop even when someone is training consistently, eating regularly, maintaining their weight, and performing well.

Underfueling doesn't always mean skipping meals or intentionally restricting food. Sometimes it simply means that your energy intake isn't keeping up with your training demands.

Common signs of underfueling in athletes can include:

🏃 Persistent fatigue
🏃 Poor recovery between workouts
🏃 Frequent injuries
🏃 Increased hunger
🏃 Feeling cold
🏃 Difficulty concentrating
🏃 Missing or irregular periods
🏃 Hormonal changes

Over time, chronic underfueling can contribute to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), impacting performance, recovery, bone health, and overall wellbeing.

🍽️ Eating in front of other people can feel incredibly vulnerable when you’re struggling with an eating disorder, disordered eating, or food anxiety.

Many people tell us they’re interested in support groups, but the idea of eating around others feels overwhelming or even cringey.

The fear of being judged, watched, compared to others, or pressured to eat differently is very real. For many people, these fears can make recovery feel even more isolating.

What often surprises people is that meal support groups don’t revolve around perfection, pressure, or being “good” at recovery.

They’re intention is to foster practicing eating in a supportive environment with people who genuinely understand how difficult it can be.

No judgment.
No forced sharing.
No expectation to have everything figured out.

Just a space to take one small step at a time alongside others who get it.

🏋 A lot of athletes and active people struggle for a long time before realizing they deserve support.

Because in sport and fitness culture, things like:
• underfueling
• compulsive exercise
• food obsession
• pushing through exhaustion
• ignoring hunger
• anxiety around rest

often become normalized.

Many people struggling still appear:
• high-functioning
• disciplined
• successful
• committed to training

But struggling silently is still struggling.

You do not need to wait until you experience a burnout, injury, or crisis to deserve help.

At Fueling For Recovery, we support athletes and active individuals navigating:
• eating disorders
• disordered eating
• RED-S and underfueling
• compulsive exercise
• food and body image struggles

Our support is designed to feel collaborative, compassionate, and realistic, not extreme or shame-based.

🏊 One of the biggest fears athletes have is:

“If I recover, I’ll lose my edge.”

But long-term underfueling often hurts:
• recovery
• concentration
• consistency
• resilience
• performance longevity

Recovery is not the opposite of ambition.

Fueling adequately can support both your health and your athletic future.

🚴‍♀️ One of the biggest performance mistakes athletes make?

Not eating enough.

And it doesn’t always feel obvious.

But underfueling impacts:
→ performance
→ recovery
→ cravings
→ control around food

More control isn’t the answer.
More fuel is.

🥗 Signs you’re underfueling (even if you think you’re eating enough)

A lot of athletes assume they’re eating enough, but still feel tired, obsessed with food or out of control.

🔋 Underfueling can look like:
-thinking about food constantly
-low energy in training
-nighttime overeating
-trying to eat “clean” all day

You may think you lack discipline to follow your training plan, but your body is actually just underfueled.
