Join fellow Brunonians, the playwright himself, and other artistic collaborators at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company for the world premiere of Hanukkah Spectacular, written by acclaimed playwright Max Posner '11! (November 19 @ 6:30 PM)

We’ll begin with an intimate chat with Max and light snacks at 6:30pm, followed by the play itself at 7:30pm, with orchestra seating for all Brown alumni and their friends.

Written by Lucille Lortel Nominee Max Posner (The Treasurer) and directed by Tony-winner David Cromer (The Band's Visit), Hanukkah Spectacular is a comedy about collaborating with trauma. Eli has three days to finish a Hanukkah play. He won’t. Instead, he goes head-to-head with collaborators, family, God, and 2,000 years of Jews arguing about being Jewish. "A comedy. Mostly."

This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting Studio Gallery, the longest-running artist-owned gallery in Washington, DC, where Dupont Circle’s creative energy is showcased in a historic townhouse!

Founded in 1956 by artist Jennie Lea Knight, Studio Gallery is a nonprofit that has hosted more than two thousand artists, from emerging talents to nationally and internationally recognized names. The gallery offers exhibition space across two floors and a rear sculpture garden. This October, visitors can step into a new round of exhibitions running through October 24th. Among them is Sabiha Iqbal’s “On a Different Plane,” a surrealist body of work rooted in the belief that people and the natural world are deeply connected, and that our actions ripple through both. Also on view is Christopher Corson’s sculptures “Animal Spirits,” carrying themes of strength in vulnerability, and the shared humanity of all people.

Studio Gallery is a vibrant part of the community through outreach, teaching, internships, and public art programming, all open to the public free of charge. The gallery also takes part in the neighborhood’s monthly “Third Thursday” and “First Friday” gatherings, which are a wonderful way to meet artists and see several galleries in one evening.

As we continue to introduce this year's additions to BCDC's ever-true team, meet our newest Member-at-Large, Praises Amponsah '24!

Praises is from Charlotte, North Carolina and graduated from Brown in 2024 with concentrations in Economics and Visual Arts. During her time at Brown, she was involved in The League of United Black Women, AfriSA, The Black Star Journal, and the Brown Consulting Club. Her favorite restaurants on Thayer are Kabob and Curry, Den Den, and Bagel Gourmet.

Currently, Praises works at Bain & Company, and in her free time, you can find her making art, planning an upcoming trip, or trying a new workout on ClassPass. Art is her passion and her mediums of choice are textiles and acrylic, though she is always open to trying new things!

Her favorite places in DC include Purple Patch, Mount Desert Island, Appioo Grill, Others Coffee, Llamabar, Mixxed, and CIVIC. She’s excited to be part of the board!

Last Saturday, Brunonians had the privilege of welcoming the latest Rhode Island Honor Flight, joining our friends at the State Society of Rhode Island to greet Ocean State veterans who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam as they arrived at the World War II Memorial. 🐻🫡🇺🇲 (Fun fact: the memorial was designed by a former Dean of RISD, had its etchings carved by the 300-year-old John Stevens Shop in Newport, and sourced its stone from a quarry in North Providence.)

The contingent of 134 veterans and family members was accompanied by the RI Firefighters Pipes & Drums Band as they arrived from visiting Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknowns, and again as we all proceeded down the North Elm Walk to the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Korean War Veterans Memorial. Veterans (and anyone with family who has served) were also able to honor their individual service at the interactive National Military Memorial, an installation for the nation's 250th birthday located in front of the Lincoln Memorial through Veterans Day.

Our deepest thanks to Colleen Creighton and the State Society of Rhode Island for organizing this amazing service opportunity to honor those who have served, as well as George Farrell from the RI Fire Chiefs Honor Flight Hub for making everything possible. Honor flights typically take place on a semiannual basis, so we look forward to joining the next one in 2027! (In other words, stay tuned. 🙂)

BCDC and the Brown Arab Alumni Association invite you to join us next Wednesday evening for Spooky Action Theater's production of Hakawatis: Women of the Arabian Nights, a London Globe hit by Irish-Palestinian playwright Hannah Khalil, presented in association with Solas Nua (October 14 @ 6:30 PM).

“Hakawati” means storyteller, from the Arabic terms hekaye, meaning story, and haki, meaning to talk. In this bold and imaginative reworking of The Arabian Nights, a tyrant avenges his wife's infidelity by wedding, bedding, and beheading a new bride every day. Years later, only five brides-in-waiting remain. These women are unapologetic and united in their fight to keep themselves -- and the whole of womankind -- alive. Their plan for the future starts with a story, leading to tales that are funny, raunchy, dangerous, and a matter of life and death.

Tickets include a special pre-show reception for alumni to meet and mingle with Spooky Action Theater's Artistic Director, Elizabeth Dinkova, and Board Member Eric Selk. The performance begins at 7:30 pm. Following the performance, attendees who wish to stay are invited to a post-show discussion with members of the creative team.

Just a few seats remain in our group block, but once we sell out, you're welcome to purchase tickets on our own and RSVP to join us for the pre-show reception. (The theatre is quite intimate, so we'll all be sitting close by.) Secure your spot today!

This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting Pie Shop, the independent H Street NE music venue where DC's local musicians take the stage!

Pie Shop is a woman-owned, intimate live music venue in the historic H Street Corridor, built by musicians for musicians. Born from the beloved Dangerously Delicious Pies, the venue opened in 2018 in the upstairs space, complete with a rooftop deck and professional-level sound. Since then it has earned a Wammie Award for Best Music Venue, with a calendar spanning indie, punk, metal, Americana, hip-hop, and more, all with a strong focus on local acts. Fans can still enjoy the shop's famous pies throughout the night, delivered directly to guests during the show. Pie Shop is also committed to the next generation of DC artists, offering all-ages shows and a free monthly showcase of emerging local talent.

THIS SUNDAY, BCDC is joining the State Society of Rhode Island to greet Rhode Island Honor Flight attendees on the National Mall! (Sunday, October 4 @ 2 PM.)

Honor flights bring World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans from Rhode Island to visit the monuments and memorials in DC and Arlington. We'll gather ahead of their visit to the National World War II Memorial, warmly and enthusiastically welcome the veterans as they arrive from Arlington National Cemetery, and thank them for their service! When they leave the Memorial, we're invited to join as the group walks to the base of the Lincoln Memorial, where the RI Firefighters Pipes and Drums Band will play once again.

As we continue to introduce this year's additions to BCDC's ever-true team, meet our new Membership Chair, Dawn Crumel '89!

Dawn is Managing Counsel for Vanderbilt Health. She originally moved to the DMV over 25 years ago, having been attracted to the area given her many classmates from DC. She loves the many cultural events that DC offers and is happy to return to DC after living in Nashville for several years. She calls Capitol Hill home and enjoys the neighborhood feel of DC.

Dawn has organized Multi Cultural Affairs and Inman Page activities in DC as well as Brown Club activities in Nashville; and is excited about helping BCDC grow its membership. Dawn served on the board of directors of the Nashville General Hospital Foundation, the board of directors of the American Health Law Association and the advisory board of the Health Law Reporter for Bloomberg BNA. She graduated with an A.B. in Biomedical Ethics from Brown in 1989 and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. At Brown, Dawn was a Women Peer Counselor and Minority Peer Counselor and spent her junior year in the Brown in Bologna program.

This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting IXÖQ, a Takoma Park social enterprise weaving together Mayan artisan tradition and modern design in the DC area!

IXÖQ (pronounced "ee-sh-auk," meaning "woman" in the Mayan languages Kaqchikel and Tz'utujil) designs colorful totes, storage baskets, and home goods handwoven from recycled plastic cord. Co-founders Katie Leary Sebastian and Becky Smith, neighbors in Takoma Park, launched the brand in 2017 after years of travel to Guatemala, where they fell in love with the local market bags, or cestas, made by artisans there. Every piece is designed in DC and handwoven by women artisans in Guatemala, whom the brand partners with as a verified Fair Trade Federation member, providing fair-wage work to more than 30 women to date.
