Coercive control is often disguised as love

Love bombing works because your brain confuses intensity with intimacy.

Here is the part nobody wants to hear
you are not actually in love with them. You are in love with the performance. The person from the beginning was a sales pitch, and sales pitches are not real life.

Real love is boring in the best way. It builds slow. It does not need fireworks to keep your attention.

If this found you at the right time, save it for the days you doubt yourself. And send it to the friend who keeps saying “but they were so sweet at first, they’re just having a hard time.”

They keep saying that forgiveness is the price of my peace, but I already paid that bill.

In the narcissistic abuse recovery world, nobody says it out loud, but forgiveness after abuse is treated like homework. Like if you don’t complete the assignment, your healing from trauma doesn’t count.

But that’s just a lie that sounds really pretty and zen.

I found my peace. I rebuilt my life. I sleep through the night again.

I did all of that without handing the person who broke me the gift of my grace.

You are not bitter. You are not stuck. You are not doing recovery wrong. You are a trauma survivor who decided that moving on does not mean letting anyone off the hook.

You are allowed to heal without forgiving. You are allowed to set boundaries after abuse that include never speaking to that person again. You are allowed to be done carrying the wound AND the guilt for not admonishing the person who gave it to you.

The Cornell case is a reminder of how easily the focus can shift away from the allegations and onto the person making them. And this isn’t unique to one case, one victim, or one type of abuse.

When an uncomfortable truth would require people to question someone they trust, a system they believe in, or a narrative they’ve already accepted, discrediting the person who speaks up is a whole lot easier than looking at the evidence.

Credibility shouldn’t be decided by who makes people the most comfy.

An investigation into someone’s character is not a substitute for a full examination of what they’re alleging.

We have to be willing to look at the evidence, even when the truth is inconvenient.

DARVO is when someone Denies what they did, Attacks the person calling them out, and Reverses the roles of Victim and Offender.

Suddenly, you’re defending yourself instead of addressing what they did.

It’s a manipulation tactic that can leave you questioning your own reality, apologizing for their behavior, and wondering how you became the villain in a story where they hurt you.

Recognizing the pattern is the first step toward breaking free from it đŸ«¶

It’s not your fault even if you went back.

Even if you stayed too long.

Even if you still love them.

Even if you’re “too smart for this” and it happened anyway.

Your brain wasn’t being weak, it was doing threat math with the information it had.

That’s how trauma rewires the brain. The same protective wiring that got you through it then is just running an old program now. You can update the program without hating the system that saved you.

Nobody is handing out permission slips for this, but here’s yours anyway. You get to stop carrying what was never yours to hold đŸ«¶

You don’t own that shame. It was installed in you.

When someone with power over you tells you who you are enough times your brain stops treating it like an opinion and starts filing it like survival data.

That’s the brain science behind narcissistic abuse. The lie gets stored as a fact, and your body keeps reacting to it years after the situation ended.

“Too sensitive. Too needy. Too much.” That was never feedback, it was a tactic.

In abusive situations, shame is how control keeps working long after the yelling stops. If you’re busy policing yourself, they never have to be the problem. It’s really convenient for them and absolutely exhausting for you.

Your brain learned this story, which means your brain can learn a new one. That’s the neuroscience of trauma recovery in one sentence.

The person who did the thing gets to carry the shame for the thing. You’re officially returning it to sender.

Save this for the next 2am spiral. Send it to your person. You were never the shameful one in that story đŸ«¶
