JAACAP Connect is interested in any topic relevant to child and adolescent mental health that bridges scientific findings with clinical practice. We encourage all levels of practitioners and researchers, from students to attendings, to submit manuscripts. The topic and format of submissions can vary widely, from neuroscience to the humanities to cultural trends in youth. What trends have you observed that deserve a closer look? Can you envision reframing key research findings into clinical care? Do you want to educate others on a broader scale, thereby improving the health of children around the country, the world? https://twp.ai/E5BWB0

Please note, at least one author of each submission must be an AACAP member in good standing. Medical students can be AACAP members free of charge and residents receive a reduced member rate. For more information regarding membership, please visit https://twp.ai/4hr1ms.

Editors’ Note: Emerging Sciences and Innovation in Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Research in child and adolescent mental health stands at an inflection point: the burden of psychiatric illness is global, heterogeneous, and dynamic, while our evidence base often remains limited, cumbersome, and insufficiently responsive to patient unmet needs. To meaningfully improve outcomes for...

This study examines how children respond to adversity over time. After assessing early adversity at baseline, the authors assessed resilience in terms of mental health over a decade in two studies of youth (n = 1,265 and n = 191). In both studies, greater resilience was related to fewer mental health problems over time. The authors also investigated two approaches to assess resilience over time and found that a grouping approach identified fewer individuals as resilient than a continuous approach, suggesting a continuous approach may better identify resilient individuals in mental health research. https://twp.ai/9OWChn

Immigrant youth make up a large and growing group in the United States. This study examined mental health, stressors, and protective factors among immigrant and nonimmigrant youth. The authors analyzed data from over ten thousand 12- to 13-year-olds across the US, including first-, second-, and third-generation immigrant youth. First- and second-generation immigrant youth experienced more discrimination and felt less accepted as Americans, but they did not report more mental health problems than nonimmigrant youth. Youth who felt more connected to their family’s culture reported fewer mental health symptoms. These findings suggest that cultural identity may help protect immigrant youth’s mental health and could inform future prevention and support efforts. https://twp.ai/WprevH
