Couples Counseling For Parents Expert knowledge and personal experience to help you and your partner get and stay connected Why Create Your Couple Story? We are strong supporters of therapy.

At Create Your Couple Story we know you are a couple that wants to be well, as individuals, as a couple, and as a family. Research is clear, in order for your individual and family health to thrive your couple relationship needs to thrive…

As a couple you likely know other areas of health are related to your overall couple health and that you need to put in the work for a healthy relationship. Traditionally this has looked like couples going to therapy. Yet, there can be a lot of barriers to going to therapy. Barriers like finding the time to go in the busyness of life, having the financial resources to pay for weekly sessions, and finding a therapist you connect with and can trust. All of these barriers, along with the stress of life, can lead to couples putting their relationship on the back burner. At Create Your Couple Story we don’t want your relationship to be a back burner relationship. That’s why we developed the Create Your Couple Story Course. It’s not therapy; it is therapeutic AND without the barriers of traditional therapy. For the price of one therapy session you can enroll in Create Your Couple Story. It can be done at your and your partner’s own pace and on your own schedule from the comfort of your home. And what you get is 8 research-informed, psychologically sound, modules, that highlight 8 key areas couples we talk to everyday say are vital to the health and wellness of their relationship. Also, this is a course created by a couple for couples. We understand the struggles couples face and the hopes that couples have. So, stop putting your relationship on the back burner and start engaging your couple relationship with the intention and care you know you deserve and as you become healthy watch your personal and family health improve as well.

No parent wants to have conflict in front of their kids. In fact we have a lot of couples initiate talking with us because they feel like they are having a lot of negative conflict while their kids are watching.

What should you do as a parent if you disagree with your partner and the kids are around.

These scripts can be helpful to have in your back pocket when a disagreement comes up.

We work with couples to navigate these moments and give practical conflicts and ways to discuss them in our book, Too Tired To Fight.

Healthy and involved grandparents... for so many of us this is a dream! Or we had it and lost it. For others, this was never in the realm of possibility. For others still, they want this kid of relationship with their parents or their in-laws but honestly are not sure what exactly they need and want or how to ask for it.
We know a lot of grandparents want to be helpful- who want to be close and who want to have the privilege of being involved in the life of their kid’s family. But they are not always sure how.
If you are looking for ways to talk to your parents/in-laws about what health, involvement and closeness can look like in this stage of the life of your family this can be a great starting point for you to think about these things for yourself.
This can be a tool to get the conversation started between you and your partner.
Conversations about parents/in-laws so often already come with a lot of opportunity for stress and misunderstanding.
Take a look at the above suggestions and notice what about this list you think you would like, what you wouldn’t like, what they are already doing that you really appreciate, etc... This can be a great way to get your thoughts organized for a conversation and a great way to also remember to catalog what is working well!
(It is so, so easy to overlook things that are going great!)

We hope you have the kind of parents/in-laws where you can have the ‘we want to be close and _____ is what would help us to feel close at this stage of our family” and that they will listen! Which is not to say this conversation will only happen once and then its smooth sailing from then on.

An unhealthy, uninvolved grandparent can be such a barrier to couple health and connection and just as important healthy and involved grandparents are a gift to a family and to a couple relationship.

Which of these would you like to receive from your parents/in-laws?

As parents, many of us ache for healthy, involved grandparents but setting the stage for those relationships can honestly feel impossible. Seriously, we do mean for so so many both parents feeling good about the relationship with extended family feels impossible.

Is even thinking about these conversations activating to you? Thinking about thinking about them? The idea of bringing this up with your partner?
So many of us parents know this stress…

Do you know this? Are you in the relationship with your own family or your partners you?

If you do have a healthy and involved grandparent in the life of your family it really is something to treasure and keep nurturing. If you have a relationship that needs… help… that is worth addressing too. These things don’t just get better on their own and over time can cause real rifts in the whole family and certainly in your relationship with your partner and in your self.

What are your relationships like with your kids grandparents and extended family?

Will this timeline be true for all individuals and couples? Not even close! But, there are so many common themes many many individuals and couples experience.

Disconnection from self and partner is very common. Unfortunately, what is just as common is not being intentional to reconnect to self and partner.

If you need/want help, there is no shame in reaching out. I (Erin) am just starting up a free community group for moms (they will be age/stage specific)- interested in learning more? Reach out!

Your friends and family, and hopefully more than any other person on the planet, your partner wants to know, wants to help, and wants to be intentional to do the work to reconnect.

We also work virtually with individuals and couples to guide them through these very places and help them get and stay connected during this vulnerable and important time!

What would you add? What do you wish you knew?

In the midst of parenting stress, it can begin to feel like there is only room for one member of the parenting team to be having a hard time. We all want to be a safe person for our partner’s to come to when they are having a difficult time, but we can knee jerk react to feeling like our own difficulty will be invalidated or like our partner is making a passive aggressive accusation.

The reactions we sometimes have, are often (usually) rooted in our histories- our couple history but also our story even before our partner entered it.
Finding a pattern’s roots is not saying that the present experience isn’t valid- it is just trying to help us see why it may feel so charged and why we have a difficult time responding and not reacting in those moments.

When your partner says they are having a hard time this doesn’t have to be an invitation to compete: “You are having a hard time? Well, let me tell you about my hard time and why it is way harder than your hard time.” Rather, when your partner says they are having a hard time it is an invitation to empathy and connection.

Empathy is grounded in being able to understand another person’s experience. Yet, this understanding comes from being able to attend to your own experience that is similar or being able to resonate with a particular feeling (you say you are sad, I have been sad before, so maybe your sadness looks like this).

So, your partners statement is not an invitation to compete but an invitation to realize an opportunity to offer a level of curiosity, compassion, and care that you hope to receive too.

This process of showing empathy is one of the foundations of human connection and feeling close to others. Competition breeds division, invalidation and resentment. And really, we all want to validate our partners and be a safe person for them to turn to in their hard days.

What would you add? What is your area of hurt? Do you know what the desire behind that it?

Being the default parent can be exhausting. It can also be wonderful. Very often we talk with couples and the default parent doesn’t even want it to be “different” necessarily, but they do want some real effort from the default parent. And even more than that, they do not want to be taken for granted in it.

What is behind these things is different for every couple. But thematically what seems to be behind the rage of being a default parent is when our partner seems to just throws up their hands and leave us to it.

If you are in a cycle of feeling enraged by your partner and the ways you feel they perpetuate you being the default parent or do not even recognize how much being the default parent costs you, actually getting into the stories and details can be helpful so you can even know what anger and hurt you are trying to communicate.

Do you and your partner get stuck feeling missed in your experience? How does your conversation go? Where do you find yourselves getting derailed? Want a guide in your individual or couple journey? Schedule your free consultation through our website today.

Anyone relate to this tired, old, worn out “conversation”?

It’s awful. Really and truly awful. It feels impossible (or at least next to impossible) to feel like your partner really and truly knows and loves you when they are trying to compare their ‘tired’ to yours.

Showing empathy can make us worry we will get missed in our experiences. And if you are in a cycle of being missed, or of missing your partner, this can be a good way to break out of old cycles.

Do you and your partner get stuck feeling missed in your experience? How does your conversation go? Where do you find yourselves getting derailed?

You don’t have to stay here. We help individuals and couples understand what is really happening in this dynamic. You can find out more about us and schedule your free consultation to see if we are a good fit for working together at CouplesCounselingForParents.com

Kids feel safe and secure knowing their parents are secure with one another. Your couple relationship being ok means to their kid that they are ok. Your kids hearing you express love and respect towards your partner, their parent, gives them confidence in their own world.

And, practicing saying kind things about our partner reminds us we actually believe them, even when we have opportunities to believe otherwise throughout our day.

Can you take today as an opportunity to let your kid hear you say something you like and respect about your partner?

Is this a challenge for you? Does it come easily?

We’re Stephen and Erin, follow along with us Stephen Mitchell, PhD & Erin Mitchell, MACP to continue strengthening your family by strengthening your couple relationship.

Are you struggling in this conversation?
Did you and partner always feel aligned in the major decisions? How did you move forward in them?
So many couples find themselves asking this question and find they and their partner are not on the same page; and the need for being on the same page is clearly of monumental importance.

This is one of those conversations where feeling misaligned feels awful, like there is not just distance between partners, but a massive and lonely chasm.

Been here? What helped you and your partner navigate big decisions toether?

Comment “yes!” if you relate and/or if you have ever felt this way?

There are so many dynamics wrapped up in these few sentences. So many stories. So many hurts, protective strategies, so much hope and desire, so much. What the specifics of how those came to be are unique to each couple.

What message each partner hears here depends very much on their own life story.

Sometimes a partner hears, “You have always been alone and you always will be, it was foolish of you to think you would have a partner in this life.” Other partners hear, “You are working your hardest but your hardest has never been enough, you’re still not doing enough not even for your family.”

But then our protective places turn us on our partners too to try to keep us safe and lessen the mpact of future hurt and disappointment. “You can’t depend on them, they keep letting you down and always will”- then you keep looking for the ways they do let you down.

Or you hear, “Stop even wanting them. Close yourself off, care less if they are present or engaged.
If you stop caring about them, it won’t hurt so much.”
On and on.

The reality is, this happens to many many parenting partners. No one wants it to, but the fact that is has or is happening to you doesn’t mean its beyond repair! It juts means something important is happening and needs to be addressed.

These things are not always easy to talk about but when approached from an open posture of each partner wanting to share about themselves and learn something about their partner’s experience these conversations can be connective and just the understanding everyone needs to feel connected even in life’s stressful moments.

Find yourselves stuck having these in a way that’s productive? Schedule a free consultation and we can all see if we would be a good fit for working together; it’s our honor to walk couples through conversations just like this one.
