The job changed. But nobody told you who you were supposed to become.
A restructuring is announced. Your responsibilities shift. Familiar colleagues disappear from the organization chart. A new system - perhaps powered by AI - starts doing work that once defined your expertise.
Management calls it transformation. For the professional experiencing it, the change can feel personal.
I have spent years working with professionals and leaders under pressure, and one distinction matters: uncertainty about your role is not the same as uncertainty about your worth. Yet under pressure, the two can become tangled.
Before deciding that your career is in danger, ask yourself:
โข What has actually changed?
โข Which of my capabilities remain valuable?
โข What must I learn or do differently?
โข Whose perspective would help me see the situation more accurately?
These questions do not eliminate uncertainty. They restore a measure of judgment and choice.
You cannot always control the pace of organizational change. You can influence how you interpret it, how you prepare, and how you respond.
Your role may be changing. Your value is not automatically disappearing.
