The science is clear: addiction changes the brain — whether the addiction involves a substance or a behavior. 🧠

When addictive substances or behaviors repeatedly trigger powerful surges of dopamine, the brain begins to adapt. Over time, dopamine receptors can become less available or less sensitive, making it harder to experience pleasure — not only from the addictive substance or behavior, but from everyday life, too.

Understanding what’s happening inside the brain is helping reshape how we think about addiction, prevention, and treatment. Addiction isn’t simply about willpower. It involves real changes in the brain.

The more we understand the science, the better equipped we are to recognize risk, start conversations early, and help protect the people we love.
