My Intestinal Fortitude: Life with an Ostomy

My Intestinal Fortitude: Life with an Ostomy I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2008 at the age of 22. I hope this blog serves as an inspiration for other young ostomates like me.

After eight years of struggling to maintain remission I decided to move forward with a colectomy. I hope this blog serves as an inspiration for other ostomates like me.

It’s only been a week and I am already regretting not getting the season pass for in past seasons. Planning on this being my summer gym! Stand up paddle-boarding is the perfect low impact full-body exercise to build strength, endurance and balance.

Recovery doesn’t have to always mean staying in bed or sitting on the couch. My mornings may be long and slow but my energy is coming back and getting up and moving is helping me regain strength. Happy to have my parents with me to go on little outings with, keep me company and make sure I don’t overdo it. Today we went to see the azaleas at the National Arboretum. Crazy to think two weeks ago I was in surgery!

Today I got a change of scenery and upgraded from walking around the block to a walk in the park 🌳

The recovery from this surgery has been very different from my colectomy and proctectomy. All in all pain hasn’t been terrible and I have managed it well since leaving the hospital with just Tylenol and Advil. However, even though this wasn’t bowel surgery progressing my diet has been rough. Any attempt to expand my diet leaves me with nausea and a lot of pain. Last night dinner consisted of ice cream and saltines.

I am hoping another week and I can start eating some vegetables. For now it’s a very low-residue diet.
