Could drugs like Ozempic do more than treat diabetes and support weight loss?

In this research project, Sam Kwon, a third-year medical student at GW, explores whether GLP-1 receptor agonists can improve recovery after kidney cancer surgery.

Analyzing data from nearly 10,000 patients, the study found that those taking GLP-1 medications had fewer complications, fewer hospital readmissions, and even lived nearly two years longer.

This work highlights an exciting possibility in cancer care: using medications we already have in new ways to improve patient outcomes.

Kidney cancer is one of the 10 most common cancers in the U.S.

This year, about 80,450 people will be diagnosed, and 15,160 will die from the disease. Early detection can make a difference. Pay attention to:

• Blood in the urine
• Persistent lower back or side pain
• Unexplained weight loss or fatigue

Know the signs, talk to your doctor, and don’t ignore changes in your body.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring strength of the Black community.

As we commemorate this day, we also acknowledge the ongoing challenges — particularly the inequities in health care access and outcomes that continue to impact Black individuals and families.

The GW Cancer Center and GW Cancer Prevention and Wellness Center are dedicated to closing these gaps by addressing barriers to care, promoting prevention, and advancing equitable health outcomes.

We believe that health is a fundamental right, and we are committed to making that a reality for all.

For LGBTQ+ individuals, and especially those also navigating other barriers, these challenges can add up.
