A screening can give us useful information.

But someone still has to feel safe enough to tell us the truth.

That's why I care so much about the relationship around these conversations too.

Knowing someone over time can make it easier to notice when something feels different, and hopefully easier for them to say when they're struggling.

🩷You do not have to wait until you're in crisis to reach out for support.

I've built my home birth practice around relationships and that's something I never want to lose as my practice grows.

I want to know more than what's written in your chart.

I want to know what's important to you, what you're worried about, what you're hoping for, and how I can best support you through this season.

It's one of the reasons I intentionally accept a small number of home birth clients each month.

It gives us time to build trust throughout pregnancy, so when you call me in labor, I'm not just showing up as your midwife.

I'm showing up as someone who already knows you and your family.

And if things don't go according to plan, that relationship doesn't disappear.

I'm still there to help you understand your options, navigate what comes next, and feel supported through the change.

Home birth care is incredibly personal.
I believe the care leading up to it should be, too🩷

A lot of the work I do as a midwife happens long before I walk into someone’s home for a birth.

🩷Continuing education
🩷Emergency drills
🩷Reviewing evidence
🩷Practicing skills
🩷Learning from other providers

It’s all part of staying prepared for the births I attend.

Because becoming qualified was never supposed to be the end of learning.

Birth doesn't always follow a predictable timeline.

When everything continues to look reassuring, sometimes the best next step isn't to rush.

It's to keep assessing, keep supporting, and give the body the time it needs.

🩷Considering home birth?
I'd love to help you explore whether it's the right fit for your pregnancy.

One client reached out to me after being told she should be induced at 39 weeks because she was over 40.

Her pregnancy had been healthy, but she left that appointment feeling unsure.

She wasn't looking for someone to tell her to ignore the recommendation.
She wanted someone to help her understand it.

We talked about why induction at 39 weeks may be recommended after age 40.

We talked about the research, how the risks can change as pregnancy continues, what the potential benefits and risks of induction are, what the potential benefits and risks of continuing the pregnancy are, and what additional monitoring might tell us if she chose to continue the pregnancy.

Most importantly, we talked about what mattered to her.

I never want anyone to feel unsure or pressured.
I never want anyone to feel like they're a burden for asking questions.

My role isn't to make these decisions for you.

It's to help you understand your options, answer your questions, and create space for you to make a decision that feels informed and aligned with your values.

Every family deserves that kind of conversation.

🩷If you're navigating a recommendation during pregnancy and wish you had more time to ask questions, understand your options, and talk through what feels right for your family, I'd love to support you.

Whether you're considering home birth or simply looking for evidence-informed guidance, my goal is to help you feel informed, confident, and supported every step of the way.

I appreciate that physiologic birth leaves room to think.

During a client birth, the original plan didn't necessarily include repeated cervical exams, IV fluids, or manually reducing a cervical lip.

Those weren't routine parts of her labor.
They became appropriate because of what we were seeing.

A cervical exam helped us better understand why labor wasn't progressing the way we expected.

IV fluids became a useful tool after hours of vomiting and concern for dehydration.

Later, gently reducing the cervical lip was another thoughtful option to help her body move forward.

Every recommendation came from the same question:
Will this give us useful information or meaningfully help the situation we're seeing right now?

Sometimes the answer is yes.
Other times the answer is no.

And every conversation should include the benefits, the risks, and the opportunity for a family to ask questions before deciding what feels right for them.

That's what individualized care looks like to me.

It's not about following the exact same path for every labor.

It's about using each tool intentionally, with consent, and in response to what that specific mother and baby need.

🩷If you're looking for maternity care that values thoughtful conversations, individualized support, and shared decision making throughout pregnancy and birth, I'd love to talk with you about midwifery care at Family Focused Midwifery.
