One of my favorite reminders from this week's Adaptive Cooking Course: meaningful learning doesn't always look the way we planned.

As part of our exploration of the five senses, we created stations focused on touch, taste, sound, sight, and smell. At our sound station, participants were invited to shake different foods in mason jars and listen to the sounds they made.

One participant had a different idea.
Instead of using the jars, he chose to pour rice into a metal bowl, listen to the clanging sounds it created, and explore the texture of the rice with his hands.

Was it what we had planned? No.
Was it exactly what he needed? Absolutely.
The goal wasn't to complete the activity "the right way." The goal was engagement, curiosity, sensory exploration, and learning. By following his interests, he transformed the activity into something even more meaningful.

When we let go of compliance and make room for autonomy, creativity, and connection, some of the best learning happens. ❤️

We’ve been quiet on social media because we have been very busy in the community the past week…Orchid and Ivy is officially in motion with summer classes and in home supports. To say Taylor Knight and I feel grateful is an understatement. 🥹

To do this kind of work with these members of our community is such a gift- thank you!!!

Did you know that if you are enrolled in our adaptive agricultural course this summer that we will be taking a trip to Grassway Organics??? This beautiful farm is owned and run by Chaz and Megan Self. We are going to learn about managed rotational grazing and organic farming on our visit. We hope to visit a few of their furry friends and their locally sourced store.

Our first session is full but reach out if you are interested in joining our second session that starts July 20!

Many of our courses are graciously being held at the East Troy Area Intergenerational Community Center. For the comfort of our participants we created a video below so they can view the space.

Today we honor and celebrate all mothers and caregivers, especially the ones walking the unique and beautiful journey of raising neurodivergent children and adults while also caring for themselves and their families with endless love, patience, and strength.

To the moms who advocate fiercely, learn constantly, show up every day, and create safe spaces where their children can thrive just as they are, we see you. Your compassion, resilience, and unconditional love make a lasting difference.

We also celebrate neurodivergent moms, whose perspectives, creativity, empathy, and strength bring so much beauty to the world.
May today bring moments of peace, joy, connection, and the reminder that you are appreciated more than words can express.

With love,

The Orchid & Ivy team

At Orchid and Ivy, we know that feeling prepared can make all the difference in creating a positive and successful experience. That’s why before each of our Enrichment Courses, we will share a short Meet the Space Video so clients and families can become familiar with the people, spaces, and activities they will experience. Our hope is that seeing what to expect ahead of time helps each client come on day one feeling comfortable, safe, confident, and ready to enjoy their new experience.

Welcome to our Adaptive Cooking Course for adults, teens, and children at Incognito Kitchen in Mukwonago! While cooking is the setting, this course is about so much more than preparing food. Through shared experiences in the kitchen, participants will build executive functioning skills such as planning, sequencing, flexibility, and problem solving, while also strengthening social communication, collaboration, and self-advocacy. Most importantly, this course is designed to foster connection and community—creating a space where participants can learn together, build relationships, and experience belonging.

Today on Commute Connections we’re discussing implicit bias versus the neurodiverse perspective. An important concept to always keep in mind as caregivers and professionals to neurodivergent individuals.
