Really exciting news! Orchid and Ivy is going to be hosting its first ever Empowerment Event this spring with a local community partner in Waukesha - Growing Together Family Summit.

We’re starting our process now to gather experts and community members who are all about supporting families of children and adults with disabilities. Do you have expertise, strategies, or encouragement to share? Do you have a topic that you feel could enhance the education, lives, and advocacy of parents to neurodiverse children? We want to hear your ideas.

One of the coolest things about starting Orchid and Ivy has been getting opportunities to engage in community like the event put on by Family Voices of Wisconsin at Blue Lotus Center today. We met so many beautiful people and to heard dozens of stories reminding us why we’re doing what we’re doing here at O&I.

We’re just so thankful to have been included and are so energized for our fall course series starting up in October.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to venture out to West Bend and explore the grounds of Blue Lotus- you need to! Adaptability at every corner- truly a nature space made for those who need it most. ✨

Come join us this fall at our Community Champions Series: Adaptive Tball ⚾️

Start date: October 1
Built for participation, community connection, movement, communication, and FUN!

For our community connections series, we think beyond the traditional way a skill is taught and ask: How can we make this skill accessible, engaging, and successful for THIS participant?

In our video below we show just one way we plan on adapting this course with the use of switches, leaf blowers, and scarves- removing barriers is one of our favorite things at Orchid and Ivy!

To us, Adaptive doesn’t mean removing the skill, it means finding another way in- let’s play ball!

When Orchid & Ivy was still just two women with a big idea, a lot of passion, and the willingness to take a pretty big risk, Chef Dana took a chance on us.

We approached her about bringing our classes into Incognito Kitchen, and she immediately said yes. She welcomed us into her kitchen with an open mind and an open heart; and from day one, she made us feel like we belonged there.

But Dana didn’t just give us a space to hold classes.

She shared her supplies generously. She engaged with our members. She celebrated what they were learning and creating. She offered encouragement, kindness, and support at every turn. And she saw two young women trying to build something new and chose not only to help us, but to champion us.
That kind of support means more than people realize when you are starting a small business.

Dana truly exemplifies what it means to be a community member. She is incredibly passionate about the place she lives and about doing her part to make it a community she is proud of and she doesn’t just talk about it. She lives it.

Dana, we are so incredibly thankful that our paths crossed. Thank you for believing in us, for welcoming our members so wholeheartedly, and for giving Orchid & Ivy a place to grow during our very first summer.

What does “Adaptive” mean?

We get asked this often- to keep it simple it means accessible.

Adaptive might look like:

💚A visual recipe instead of written directions.
💚Using AAC to communicate.
💚Different tools that fit a participant’s motor needs.
💚Taking movement breaks when a body needs regulation.
💚Offering choices so participants have autonomy and control.

The goal isn’t for everyone to complete a task the same way.

The goal is for everyone to participate in a way that honors their strengths, supports their needs, and builds confidence.

Did you know Orchid and Ivy partners with local adult day programs to provide therapeutic enrichment classes? We’re strong believers that learning never ends and some of the best learning happens through experience. We have loved our time partnering with the The Haase House - incredible group of men and women led by an inspiring empathetic staff!
