✨Things that surprised me about my cesarean birth✨

I am beyond grateful for the insights and experiences my clients have shared with me about their cesarean birth experiences so I felt rather prepared going into my scheduled cesarean.

That said, I quickly realized there are things that I had not prepared for and didn’t know happened during and after a cesarean birth. Now, I do fully recognize that every birth and every person is different so this is just my experience. I will also say, these things are what I found to be surprising with a planned cesarean (compared to an unplanned!). Unplanned cesareans can be completely different experiences and I want to highlight that the environment for me was calm and relaxed though for some I imagine it was the exact opposite and very hard / stressful / and traumatic.

I’m sure there are other things that will come to mind as I reflect on this experience but for now, these are what I come back to. It is also worth mentioning that I don’t share this to scare anyone, really just create awareness and also some sense of comfort if you are going into a cesarean birth.

If you’ve had a cesarean birth or would like to share what surprised you about your birth, comment below!

The birth of our sweet girl 💗

What started as a routine weekly maternal fetal medicine appointment turned into a beautiful cesarean birth (37+5) of our daughter and a subsequent stint in the NICU.

This journey was hard and beautiful at the same time and is one that I don’t ever want to forget. It taught me so many lessons on both a personal and clinical level - I can’t wait to dive deeper and share more with you all.

Until then, you can find me snuggled on the couch with my little peanut 🫶

How your email finds me 🤍

The sweetest girl, Layne Elizabeth, was born on Wednesday, May 20th. We could not be more in love and excited to have her here earthside.

She’s is such a brave & strong little lady. Since her arrival she’s been hanging out in the NICU due to respiratory distress - she’s going to be okay but we appreciate any positive thoughts her way 🫶

Here’s to a lifetime of loving this little lady beyond words.

Cesarean birth awareness month ✨

There is a false narrative out there that mamas who have had cesarean births don’t need pelvic floor PT.

This is so far from the truth and in fact, pelvic floor PT should be mandatory postpartum care (for all births really) given, well, it’s a major abdominal surgery (on top of growing a babe for 10 months).

Pelvic floor PT can support healing, core & pelvic floor recovery, and address any postpartum movement concerns / return to movement journey.

Cesarean births impact all layers (7 total) of the abdominal wall and more often than not, mamas are given little to no information about how to heal, recover, and rehab their core and pelvic floor.

Please know it should be standard of care to see a pelvic floor PT after ALL births, including cesarean births.

Intuitive movement has been such a gift this pregnancy.

If you’re not familiar with what intuitive movement is, it’s essentially a movement approach that honors your body’s internal cues rather than relying on rigid external plans.

It focuses on finding joy, energy, and pleasure in movement and gives permission to adapt to what feels best in the moment.

Intuitive movement moves away from “all-or-nothing” approaches to exercise and encourages flexibility and connecting to your body. Tuning into energy levels, pain, stress to determine what your body needs. Joyful movement is a big component as well - trying to enjoy what you’re doing while recognizing the mental / physical / and emotional benefits.

Most importantly, it’s not dismissing what we know supports health or avoiding challenge. You can still build strength, maintain cardio capacity, and persue progress without overriding signals your body is trying to tell you.

For me, this has been a work in progress for many years, even more so during pregnancy. Always a gentle reminder that our bodies are constantly changing, and our movement can change and adapt too.

It can be hard to navigate all the information online about movement during pregnancy.

Let’s just be really clear. Exercise in pregnancy is safe, beneficial, and recommended for most people. If you have a medical reason to not exercise, you likely have been told.

Moreover, movement doesn’t have to be perfect to be helpful. Lean into what you enjoy, let it change day to day, and prioritize rest, fuel, and hydration.

Beyond this, know there are a lot of fear-based myths out there that can be really unhelpful and if you are unsure if something is safe for you, please ask.

Every body responds differently and if something doesn’t feel right or you find yourself having questions, know there is support out there.

What a myth you’ve heard that isn’t true? I’ll go first, twisting should be avoided during pregnancy. Comment below what comes to mind! ⬇️⬇️

Let’s connect if you want to chat more about pelvic floor PT, movement during pregnancy, or really anything else. Here to support you along the way!
