Memorial Day has never been just another long weekend in our family.

It is a day of remembrance. A day that carries names, faces, memories and sacrifice.

For many, freedom feels ordinary because it’s all we’ve ever known. But for others, that freedom came at the cost of someone they loved deeply. A son. A daughter. A husband. A wife. A friend who never made it home.

There are families across this country carrying empty seats at tables because someone chose service before self. Memorial Day belongs to them.

We often remind ourselves that we are not descendants of weak men. The freedoms we enjoy today were built and protected by generations willing to sacrifice greatly for people they may never even meet.

So today we remember. Quietly. Humbly. Gratefully.

We honor those who gave everything and the families who continue carrying that loss every single day.

We do not forget. 🇺🇸

This week’s newsletter was called Robe Season because apparently sprinting across the pasture in pajamas and a robe while cows have babies is just part of my personality now 😂

This week included:
- three new bull calves
- very little sleep
- fox drama
- milk updates
- milk testing results from our weekly milk testing
- Daniel and I both having a tiny gender disappointment moment over yet another bull calf

Honestly, that’s what our newsletters are. Just real updates from the farm each week. The stories behind the food, what’s happening with the animals, what’s hard, what’s funny, what’s exciting and all the little moments in between that don’t make it onto social media.

I always write them like I’m talking to you, my neighbor. Like we’re standing around at the trailer catching up on the week while somebody’s holding a coffee.

Newsletter subscribers also get first info on new products, pre-orders, restocks and special things before everyone else — like when cream becomes available again 👀 So if you want first dibs on the good stuff, you kinda have to become a newsletter insider 😉

If you like hearing the real behind-the-scenes of farm life and want to follow along with all the chaos over here, you’d probably enjoy them too - in your inbox every Friday!

This weekend, as we gather with family and enjoy the ordinary freedoms we hold dear, we pause to remember those who gave everything.

There’s just something about a Sunday at the market…slower pace, good food, and a chance to actually enjoy getting your weekly staples.

We’ll be at Highside Farmer’s Market in Columbus tomorrow (Sunday) from 11-3, and we’re coming in stocked.

Milk fridge is stacked. Eggs are loaded. Freezers are full.
Insert my happy dance 💃 🕺🏻 🪩

And to make it feel like spring finally showed up for real -
💐 Bouquets from Jenny Jack Farm (they’re always so beautiful)
🌱 Garden plants from Serenbe Farms - tomatoes, peppers, herbs, flowers and more…all ready to go straight in the ground (or container).

Come walk the market, grab something fresh, let the kids play and be a part of your local food system.

And if you’ve been saying you want to start buying closer to home or know your farmer … this is your spot!

Highside Market | Sunday | 11-3

I used to think leaving the house meant grabbing your keys and walking out the door…
Now it’s:
Can you go check the animals, make sure everybody is where they’re supposed to be, and report back before I commit to this decision. 😂

Because farm chaos waits for no one.

Last week, I shared what our dairy cows eat and what that grocery bill really looks like.

This week’s newsletter is all about what happens after milking — how we clean udders and teats, bottle milk, rapidly cool it, sanitize equipment, and test our milk weekly to make sure our systems are doing what they’re supposed to do.

I also share:
✔️ Daniel’s milking routine (even in freezing temps)
✔️ Our filtering + bottling process
✔️ Why rapid cooling matters
✔️ How SPC + coliform testing works (in normal-people language)
✔️ Why we calf-share even though it means more work
✔️ And what our most recent test results looked like (spoiler: exceptionally clean, even with winter mud)

And because my curiosity has officially been sparked, I’m also planning to pick up some store-bought milk and run it through our testing process next. Daniel says he can’t justify spending money on milk when we literally have milk cows… but I’m justifying it in the name of science and curiosity. 😅 Stay tuned.

This is the behind-the-scenes side of farming — not glamorous, but deeply important. No shortcuts. Just intentional systems, daily work, and transparency.

If you’re on our email list, check your inbox (and click “view entire message” — this one’s a longer read). If you’re not on the list and want to see how your milk goes from cow to your "pets", now’s a good time to join.

Stay warm out there — the cows don’t care about the weather, and Daniel still shows up like always. 😉

Daniel was up early milking cows and feeding animals, which means we will absolutely still be at Highside Market today.

Come grab: milk, meat and eggs
Veggies from Legacy Crate and sourdough 🥖 from Southern Sourdough Co. for those snow day soup bowls.

Support your farmer. Spend some of your snow day with us. You can be the hero and save the market day!
